Lightroom: How to Reduce File Size of NEF in Web Gallery?

When importing a NEF file into Lightroom and use it as part of the Web Gallery, is there a way to reduce it's file size when the Gallery is published.... more than what I am finding Lightroom creates as 240kb?

Or, should I start by making it a lower file-size jpeg before I even put it into the Web Gallery process?

Try the Quality slider on the Output Setting panel.

The LR does the work for you. Original NEF (or other) are converted and resized in web module. Look at "Appearence" in left panel.

As pointed out, the NEF is your source (sort of a negative). Whether you are looking at it in Library or the Develop, you are actually looking at a rendered preview. When you publish the image to a gallery, Lightroom creates a "rendition" which is a permanent file-based preview based on the raw image data.

So, the NEF itself is never published. Only the rendition you ask it to create. When you create the rendition, tweak the settings for the quality vs. size trade-off. See here for empirical info on quality of JPEGs vs. their size: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-good...
