How do I save text (a text layer?)

Please Help. I don't have much hair to lose.... (This program is driving me Nucking Futts.)

What I want to do is create a *.jpeg containing only text on a white background. Sounds so simple, right?

What I do.

1 Reset Text Tool
2 New | Blank File | 12x12 inches , 150pix/inch, RGB color, white background. (My white square shows up. so far so good)
3 Click where I want my text to be. Background goes pink.
4 Right Click & Paste (had it on the clipboard). Text appears on pink background.
5 Click green COMMIT check box. Background goes back to white, & area where text was "sparkles & waves". Whatever. My wife says it is because the text is white too, but the foreground & text color selector both say 'black'.

Now what? If I "save as" to JPEG I end up with a white square. How do I get this to save text on a white background?

You're using the text selection tool, or are in quickmask mode.

Thanks

After reading the help manual a few more times I finally realized I was using the Type Mask tool & not the Type Tool. The help section for TEXT wasn't very helpful in showing how to get to the Type Tool.

BTW, PSE9 does not have a quickmask mode.

BTW - you didn't say which app or version you were using in your original post.
