How can I make a background transparant??

I really want to make a background that's transparant, I've tried other things, but nothing works. Does anyone know how to make one?? Please Help! :) Thanks

Which Adobe application are you using?

And how are you planning to use this image? Some file formats don't support transparency, and support for transparency can be different in some applications (page layout, web browsers, etc.).

What kind of image are you trying to create?

And have you done a web search for tutorials on masking, transparency, or making a transparent document for your specific use?

The first step is to jump the background to its own layer.
Then you can start masking it, and saving it to a format that understands transparency: PNG, GIF, TIFF, PSD/PSB, etc.
But the way you do it will depends of the answers to Chris' questions.
