I'd like to automatically write metadata to DNG files, as we can with other file formats. Is this possible?

Yes, just turn on Autowrite in Catalog Settings.

Was just told that "Automatically write changes into XMP" also autowrites to DNG, is that what you're referencing? Simple fix for Adobe, can you guys change it to read "Automatically write changes into XMP and DNG"?

"XMP" (Extensible Metadata Platform) actually means the metadata itself, not the .xmp sidecar file. XMP is written directly into the file for JPEG, TIFF... etc. *and* DNG. Only for the proprietary RAW files (e.g. .CR2, .NEF), a separate .xmp sidecar file is written with the XMP metadata, in order to protect the proprietary data structures.

So the label of the checkbox is correct :-)

P.S. Also explained in the help file: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom...
