It seems that these files are supported using plug-in 8.7, but I can't see how to access or install this. All help appreciated. Many apologies if I've missed a FAQ!
Thanks.

You can find the faq either in the Elements forum:
https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/overview
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1030798
or in the camera raw forum:

In your case, the solution is to download and install the free Adobe DNGconverter mentioned in the Elements faq. This standalonge software (not a plugin) will be able to batch convert a whole folder of your raw files to the DNG format that your PSE12 can read and edit.
