Lightroom Classic CC: How to rebuild previews for selected videos

Some time in late 2017 one of the releases of Lightroom introduced a bug that got the wrong orientation for any iPhone video shot in portrait orientation. Now with the 7.4 release this has been fixed. Any of the videos that were effected by this bug are now showing the correct orientation in Loupe and playback. However, in Grid they still show with the wrong orientation. 

I tried "Rebuild Previews" but that simply reports the preview up to data. I am trying to find a way to invalidate or delete the previews for the affected videos so that they can be rebuild. Jeffery Friedl has this as an option in his Bag-O-Goodies plugin but for some reason it is disabled for video files. I have reached out to him on that.

Does anyone have an idea for how to do this short of deleting and reimporting the affected videos into the library?

If you playback the video in Lightroom does the thumbnail then reorient?  Preview thumbnails are not rebuilt for Videos very often and that is one way to initiate it on previously imported videos.

Hi Rikk,

So far nothing I have tried short or removing and reimporting the affected videos will make Lightroom rebuild the preview. 

Since Adobe broke it, it would sure be nice if they could help with a reasonable solution.

Nope, no joy there. 

It ought to be pretty easy to invalidate the video previews as just one minor develop adjustment does that for images. Of course the Develop module is disabled for videos.

You do know that you can apply adjustments to videos, Louie? You just need to use Sync Settings, so I would use the Capture Frame to generate a JPEG, adjust it and sync its adjustments to the video.

Have you tried Metadata > Read Metadata from File? Of course, if you've added metadata in LR, it will be lost because Adobe have failed to allow us to save metadata to video files in LR, but you can test the idea on one video (and keep the metadata in a Capture Frame JPEG).
Another thought is to rename the video externally, then resolve the missing file in LR by pointing to it. I'm hoping this would rebuild the thumbnail.

Unfortunately, that's not available for video.

There's also Preferences > Performance > Video Cache Settings > Purge Cache.

John B. I tried the capture frame, sync settings  trick you suggested but that did not fix the problem. Interestingly the capture frame also retains the wrong orientation. So it is apparently coming from the incorrect preview.

All I see is there is a check box "Limit video cache size".

Interesting, that does not show up until I check the option.  In any case tried purging the cache which did not affect the previews but did slow down loading of videos in Loupe. I presume because Lr has to build new cache entries.

There have been reports over the years that the Video Cache Settings aren't always respected. You could try manually deleting the video cache:

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe\Lightroom\Caches\Video
/Users/user/Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom/Video

To be safe, you might rename the folder out of the way, rather than deleting it, just in case you have to restore it.

You could also try manually deleting all previews for your catalog (the Previews.lrdata folder in the catalog folder). Of course, it will take a very long time to rebuild previews for a large catalog.

There were some orphans left in the "Media Cache Files" folders after the purge. I cleaned those out and now the purge removes any new files that show up when opening a video in Loupe.

It's not that big of deal to rebuild the entire previews database. It would be easier to delete the affected files from the catalog and then Synchronize the folder to re-import them and build new previews.
