LR keeps adding keywords automatically that are irrelevant or confusing. I would like to turn this function off.

Which version of Lightroom? I do not know any version that adds keywords automatically, but in Lightroom Classic you can apply a metadata or an import preset on import, and those presets can contain keywords that then also would be applied automatically.

Latest LR Classic on my iMac. I understand your comment about presets. Your comment just lead me to the answer. I am receiving photos for a book. If the photos have been processed in LR with keywords and presets by the other party, their keywords and data are added to my list when I import the photos. Thank you.

Yes they do. To solve this annoying problem you can follow what I did and create an import preset that removes keywords already attached or imbedded in the imported photos.
I call the preset "Remove KW's on import" but can be used on it's own as well. I apply it during import if needed. If you're already using an import preset, just add this to it. The key element is to put a check mark on the "Keywords" box (2 check marks, one on the left one on the right), but make sure there is nothing in the list of keywords in the box. This will remove any keywords present when this preset is used.
