How do I change the colour of one imported picture in my image?

i dragged a b&w silhouette of a bird into my image. i have tried changing the colour of the bird 3 different ways but it doesn't work.
a) colour replacement tool
b) replace colour
c) selective colour

If the bird is a layer by itself, select it, then invert the color to white, and with the selection still intact, use the Channel Mixer to mess with the color of the now selected white colored area or just fill the selection with various colors, and/or use the black bird as a layer mask instead of the layer contents and fill the layer with your desired color.

Thank you. I was able to invert the colour to white but unable to fill the white coloured area --I ended up filling the entire page even though I only had the bird layer selected. I know I'm doing something wrong, but still can't figure out what it is.

Also, when I try to play with layer mask any colour I select somehow becomes grayscale.

Make sure you have the layer with the Bird on it selected. Click the 'fx' button on the layers panel and select "Color Overlay" from the pop-up and click the grey color chip to bring up the color picker to select what color you want to change the bird to.
