I often look thru my catalog of pictures with different names  FB picture or cell phone names.
is there a internal way in LR to rename a single file of Files rather than going out and then do it external and the recapture?

Within Library, move down in the right hand column. The picture's filename and Exif information appears and you can change the filename. The original filename will then be shown below the one that you gave it.

Try to rename the Filename in Library mode in 'Metadata'.
