Lightroom Classic: How can I merge two 'people' in the face recognition screens ?

I just started using Lightroom and the People Face Tagging...  on 38k photos.
I have accidentally, for instance, tagged some pics as 'John' and some as 'John Smith'
If I rename one of those to match the others, the pics are 'moved' together -- but when I start typing 'john' for other pics, both John and John Smith come up...  So it seems that LR Classic still has face info split into two people.
Anyway, I was trying to find a way to actually *merge* the two so I don't see them both in some cases.

How exactly did you do that?  Here's how to merge faces tagged with "John" into faces tagged with "John Smith":

1. Do View > People.

2. Find the face named John and rename it to John Smith:

When I follow those steps and then start typing "J" as a face tag, I only see "John Smith".

If you've followed these steps and still see "John" when you start typing "J", maybe you still have a keyword named "John". Go to the Keyword List panel, click People, and type "John" into the Filter people search box:
