Photoshop: Hot-key Palette

When thinking about how to bring how I work traditionally into my digital work, I realized that a hot-key color palette feature would be incredible for quick, seamless changes of color. Say that you could assign a color to a number key (eg red to 1) and instead of having to eyedrop, go through your foreground/background, or click a swatch, all you had to do was press that number to switch your foreground color.

It would also be even better if they saved per file so your palettes weren't lost and if you could save multiple schemes to switch between, if you needed to save perhaps a range of values for multiple hues.

Which product are you using?

You can already assign a key to open the color picker dialog in Photoshop CS5 and later.
And you can also use the HUD color picker if you have a capable GPU.

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to the color picker in CS5 and CS6:

I am currently using CS5.5. I would like to switch colors without having to go through the picker interface. I came to this idea by holding multiple colored pencils in one hand and just rapidly changing as I blended tones. To clarify my idea of hot-key I mean that if I wanted to move from a specific red to a specific green, specific blue, etc, that are all part of the palette I am using and blending in the piece I could just press 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Then you probably want to use the color picker HUD.

But the only good way to keep picking specific colors like you suggest is via the swatches palette.

Thank you for presenting the options currently available to me. I would like to spend some time creating a visual mock-up of the interface I had in mind when I proposed this.
