Photoshop: Holding Shift before using Move Tool causes freeze

Hello, whenever I need to move something a few times in a straight line by holding Shift and Move Tool, it causes Photoshop to become non-responsive with the smaller white arrow (without the tail) active.

It only happens if you press and hold Shift before moving a layer (which I used to do for about 20 years... muscle memory)
Steps to replicate, new flattened PNG file :
  1. unlock the background layer
  2. move it a few times WITHOUT holding Shift, should be fine
  3. then try to press and hold Shift and left-click at pretty much the same time as if you wanted to drag the layer left or right in a straight line
  4. the small white arrow will stay active and the layer will probably not move anymore
  5. Photoshop will seem ok according to task manager but it won't respond to any further clicks, escape, ctrl+break etc.
  6. the only solution will be to kill the process; restarting Photoshop makes no difference, it'll happen again if repeated.
The file I first noticed it with was an 8-bit PNG screenshot exported from Chrome, resolution 7680x6004px, but I tested many other files and it happens every time I hold Shift and then try to move something using Move Tool.

Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.6 20190724.r.80 2019/07/24: 1207344  x64

Howdy Lukas,

I believe that you're encountering a problem, but I cannot reproduce it on any of my machines.  As a result, I'd be willing to bet that there is at least one more element required to trigger this problem.  What kind of keyboard are you using?  Are you using a tablet?  Do you have this problem with all files or only certain ones?  What other apps do you have running at the same time, particularly side-car apps that use keyboard shortcuts?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

yeah, I also tried it on multiple PCs and accounts and I wasn't able to replicate it elsewhere. Keyboard language, another program or Photoshop update were my first thoughts because I don't remember having this issue ever before. So, I rechecked everything, rebooted and it was still happening. No tablet, just mouse and keyboard. It happened with every file I had the opportunity to test.

The issue seems to have disappeared after two days, no further reboots after the first one. It just stopped doing it. Not sure what was wrong and I can't replicate it anymore.

Okay Lukas, thanks for the update.  If the problem returns, just ping me on here.  Try to keep a record of what other apps you had open and what you were doing.  That'll help with diagnostics later.

Thanks,
David
