What operating system?

What type of layers are they?

Does anything record in the history panel when you do a merge down?

Could you post a screenshot?

I'm on Mac OS 10.6.6.

It doesn't matter what kind of layers they are: they can be pixel layers or adjustment layers. When I do a Merge Down, nothing is recorded in the History panel, no matter what kind of layers they are. The same thing happens with Merge Layers.

I also just noticed that after I do these steps, I can't Undo or Step Backwards -- both of thse commands are grayed out in the Edit menu.

This is after opening a file and selecting three layers:

This is after doing a "Merge Layers":

I can't reproduce this. When I use merge down or merge layers, they show up in the history palette, and undo and step backward are both available.

Did you install the Photoshop 13.0.1 update?

Also, why have you not installed the 10.6.8 update from Apple? They fixed a lot of bugs in each dot release.

I have Photoshop 13.0.1 -- is there a patch beyond that? I'll have to check into the OS 10.6.8 update. I just quit out of Photoshop and relaunched it, and now this bug is not happening for me either.
