Lightroom: History includes usage/export

I would love it if an image's History recorded the point at which it was exported to a drive, uploaded to the web, printed, etc.

This would help me track the usage of an image as well of the state of development it was in at that point of use.

Huh? It already does. The trouble is, it's not very usable and perhaps needs more detail and maybe more features.

For example, I have an image that History says was printed on date X. I know it was part of a batch, but I can't recall which other images were printed. Why can't I right click on that History step, and create a smart collection of all the images with that date/time stamp in their History?

Ha, I'm a fool. I was wondering why my "exports" weren't showing up last night. I forgot I was doing screen grabs, not exports.

Carry on, don't mind me.

And great suggestion, John.

This would be great. Particularly if it allowed us to record a short note about the usage, and even manually add usages to selected photos that were used outside of LR. For example, "Sold 11x14 #1/200 to XXXX", or "Sent to client for review", etc.

This could also save a ton of storage and unclutter the catalog. Many of the derivative files I keep are just to make sure I know exactly what I sent out. If I could recreate that at any time by clicking on the usage note in history - no need to keep the files.

Two thumbs up (all I got).

My exports already are kept in edit-history, although I've heard some people say theirs aren't (???)

Yes, the ability to annotate edit-history would be awesome indeed - right-click to modify, but also as a standard feature of exports: edit-history step title format = ..., w/presets... (along with a multitude of other edit-history enhancements - great feature already, with potential to be fantastic!)

See Jeffrey's Snapshot on Export plug-in. It does almost exactly what you're asking for.

That does look like a great plug-in and I'll try it out as a good place to start, but I think the FR goes well beyond that.

First, as Jeffrey says on the plug-in site, there's a flaw in that exports update history on the Master file and all Virtual Copies equally. Obviously, that needs to be granular to only the selections that were actually exported, as part of the point is to know exactly what got sent.

In addition to recording usage notes when Exporting/Publishing, The post to history also needs to occur:

  • When images are printed

  • When a Slideshow PDF or Video is created

  • When a Web Gallery is Exported or Uploaded

  • Manually in the history panel

I went ahead and gave this my vote - although the feature already exists as stated, the suggested enhancements contained here-in would be very worthwhile.
