HELP! Text missing from camera-ready client PDF when opened in photoshop

I work for a magazine. Often, when we receive camera-ready PDF files from clients, I will open it in photoshop, flatten it, get rid of any crop marks, etc. (to prevent frequent post scripting errors).
This time when I opened a file from a client, I didn't notice that the text at the top was missing -- huge problem. 
My boss wants a definitive answer about how this happened, and I have no idea what to tell him. This has always been the solution to PDF issues, not the cause.

I do not know what happened, I would need the file for that. But I know that I would not be happy if my PDF files would be opened in Photoshop or Illustrator or other programs not made for this, to "flaten my files".

Hi Elizabeth,

Could you please explain what you mean by having problems "with fonts post-scripting"?  I'd like to help you, but I don't understand the issue.  Also, are you aware that you can embed a font within a PDF so even if the user doesn't have it, everything will display correctly.  Could you be in this situation, possibly without the embedded font?

This was a camera-ready ad that we received from a client.

Frequently, we find that once we place an ad on the page in Quark (yes, we are the ones still using it), when we PDF the page, some of the fonts look nothing like they are supposed to.

The issue with this particular file is when I opened it in photoshop to crop it to our specs (add a frame, etc.) I didn't realize a piece of text was missing that was on the original PDF. I saved it and it went to press without that particular line of text.

I'm trying to figure out why it would have been missing.

Do you open these files in Acrobat Reader to see how they look? You can also have the client send a jpeg proof as a reference.

If a pdf is truly camera-ready, you don't put it in QuarkXPress. You RIP should have pdf support and be able to process it as-is.

When I send a PDF to my suppier, I create a lowres JPEG for the supplier to check against his output. Please ask your customers to send you lowres JPEG files for your visual reference.

I would also offer you to investigate the PDF file, if you would like to share it with me. I can only investigate further if I have more information. Please note: I'm not an employe of Adobe.

It's starting to sound like the PDF wasn't created correctly or that it contains bad or missing font information.  If you want to send me a copy, I can try to investigate further.  My email is David <dot> Mohr <at> Adobe <dot> com.
