so for some reason when I now convert say an adjustment layer or group to a smart object it creates a new layer and completely wipes any masks and adjustments, when applied to a group it turns the group to layer. never had this problem and its driving me nuts as iv got work to finish.
any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, the smart object layer is a new layer that contains the composite of whatever you converted to a smart object.  No, it can't filter or adjust anything outside of the smart object - because the contents are now in a separate document.

It sounds like you need to do a bit of reading on what smart objects are and how they work.

Nope, your not understanding what im saying im fully aware of what smart object's do and have used them from the very start. When I convert a group or a layer to a smart object or filter, It NOW flattens my group, instead of turning my group to a smart group, and also wipes any layer masks on a my layer and I lose my adjustment. Whats happening? I havent touched anything, and no one can explain whats going on! Even adobe can't help! Ill try and upload a some picture's because this is a joke.

It sounds like you are very confused about how smart objects work.
Yes, anything you convert to a smart object will be contained in a separate document and replaced with a single layer.

No, none of this has changed. But it still sounds like you need to read up on how smart objects work.

Lol! Jesus christ! You're Still not getting it. Ill give an example: ive added some headlight beams to a car, so I start be making an exposure adjustment layer, use selection tool and draw the beam, then add mask to that layer, I repeat the process ect. Now I want to add a gaussian blur to each one of these layers ive created, so with the layer selected I covert to smart filter (as normal) BUT now for some reason as soon as I do this, the mask and adjustment layer dissappear and im left with a BLANK smart layer.

Again, you are demonstrating that you do not know how smart objects work.

The layer you converted to a smart object is now in a separate document (the child document), and it is replace with a smart object that is the composite of that child document.  The smart object can blend the composite image of the child document.  But the masks and adjustments inside the child document can not interact with the rest of the parent document.

Please take some time to read up on how smart objects work.
