Lightroom: can't get past "select catalog"

I am a newb to LR . I just pickup LR3 am try to install on PC runing window 7 32.put CD in pc an in stall the program work fine until I go to Icon.this is where iam lost .it says Select Catalog when I try to open a file an then i try to open a photo it say do you want to replace it ? what am i doing Worng? it will not open

What happens if you choose "Create a New Catalog..." does Lightroom open normally?

newb to lr install lr3 on pc will not open this what open Select Catalog with a blank square under this Choose a Diff Catalog or Create a new Catalog tey both an photos open try to select one or file an it says Do you want to replace what goimg on unstall the progman again need help thank you HarryG

A catalog is not a photo. You need to create a catalog and then import photos into that catalog.

The photos, themselves, don't reside in the catalog, but LR keeps track of the location of each photo as well as any adjustments or other metadata changes you've told LR to perform on that photo. The LR catalog is a database of photo locations and photo adjustments.

Here is a tutorial on LR operations, one of hundreds you can find. It may be for a version of LR that is not exactly the same as what you're running, so some of the adjustments it describes could be different, but the overall operation is similar:

After uninstalling, find and delete the Lightroom preferences file, then re-install.

You may have set a photo as your catalog which won't work.

On Windows Vista/7 the LR3 preferences file to delete is located in:
c:\Users\[user name]\AppData/Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom/Preferences
and is called:
Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs

If you are on another operating system the following Knowledge Base article may help although the Windows 7 information should be the same as the Vista information:
