I have been using photoshop for about 8 years and have today had an unusual problem that I have never before encountered. After scanning a drawing I went into IMAGE - ADJUSTMENTS and on pressing the Contrast selection instead of receiving the contrast bar I got the icon for the "colour choice pipette". I now cannot get out of it and am in a "loop". I turned my computer off and on again but after going back into the drawing and attempting to use the contrast I again received "colour choice pipette". I now cannot use any other function icon without getting a "Warning Bleep"

Have you tried pressing ESC?

It sounds like the dialog for the adjustment might be outside of your current display (maybe you had a second display hooked up recently?), and this you are not seeing the dialog. When you are in many of the adjustment dialogs, the tool will switch to the eyedropper tool.
