I don't remember for sure, but I probably just sent them this link: http://prodesigntools.com/direct-down...

Be sure the follow ALL of the instructions exactly, or this will not work.

I downloaded the file. I opened it using Windows Explorer.Tthere were two files labeled "Setup".

One is a 148KB Application. When I tried running it I got this error message "Windows installation package coould not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can acces it,"

The second is a 12,649KB Windows Installer Package. Running it gave me this error message "Install Photoshop Elements 8 using Setup.exe in the root folder."

Am I doing something wrong or is this just not going to wortk?

The problem is that this is a ZIP file. If you just double-click the file it is not extracted, instead Windows just treats it like a normal folder. The files are still compressed and will not run in this fashion, nor will they recognize the partner files.

First you have to extract the ZIP before you can run the installation. Usually all you have to do is right-click the ZIP file and choose "Extract Here" or one of the similar options. Then you will want to run the Application version of the Setup file (the one called Setup.exe).

I don't think anyone else is following this thread anymore, but it is a Holiday so maybe Customer support will respond tomorrow. If they don't, start a brand new thread like I did. they were really quick to respond for me.

OK I unzipped the file and ran the Setup application. It asks for aserial number. I don't have that because it was written on the box with the original disk [which is lost]

If you registered your product, then you should be able to log into your account on Adobe.com and retrieve your serial number. (the article I posted above has instructions)
