Photoshop: Healing Brush behaviour is erratic, sometimes not working

When retouching, I duplicate background layer, then create blank layer with mask. I do my retouching on the blank layer.

Sometimes the Spot Healing Brush and Healing Brush work and sometimes they don't. Often one works and not the other, and the one that works switches from one to the other.

Today, the Healing Brush was working BUT it was leaving an on/off trail behind it. It looked like marching ants created by the healing brush.

Are you on Mac or Windows?

Does the problem persist if you disable OpenGL Drawing?

Do you have the latest graphics drivers installed?

GPU and OpenGL support | Photoshop CS4, CS5

no idea where openGl is. the content aware button does not pop up...I downloaded a trail version after uninstalling the version I bought. And it showed up in the free version...will I be able to use my numbers to keep that version?
