Photoshop CC 2018: Healing and Spot Healing Brush Lag

In most recent 2018 update, healing and spot healing brush have become much less responsive, sometimes taking multiple seconds after completion of stroke to affect the image.

Late 2016 Macbook, up to date OS and Software

I've done the regular things like turning off OpenCL and changing other performance options... no change.
GIF framerate is sped up 2x

I can now confirm that on two machines, even if you turn smoothing off, eventually it starts lagging again. Eventually it slows down again. So we're pretty much back to 2015.5 until this gets resolved.

Please try these steps and let us know if this gets spot healing working at a normal speed for you.

***Remember it is necessary to disable smoothing with every launch of Photoshop***

To disable smoothing:
  1. Disable the smoothing feature in your Brush Settings (Image 1).
  2. When spot healing tool is active, drag smoothing to 0% (Image 2).

1.

2.

Thank you,

Works fine if I don't use the brush first but as soon as I use the brush and go back to spot healing it gets slower and slower. File size is makes no difference.

It solves the lag problem, temporarily, but it adds another issue... when removing the Smoothing as described by Hannah, the Healing Brush tool doesn't work properly. It seems to work just like a Clone Stamp.

I have the basic Creative Cloud plan (LR+PS). How can one revert to the previous version (PS 2017)? These last days have been a nightmare and my retouching work is getting delayed because of this bug.

"Disable the smoothing feature in your Brush Settings (Image 1)."

Great... easily done.

"When spot healing tool is active, drag smoothing to 0% (Image 2)."

How on earth do you do this? If the brush properties are open, you are using the BRUSH, and NOT the SPOT HEALING TOOL. If you then tap on the Spot Healing tool, the brush settings are disabled and there is NO SMOOTHING SLIDER in the spot healing brush to "drag to zero" as shown in "Image 2".

Can you please give alternative instructions which do work? Thanks in advance.

Spot healing tool in latest update of Photoshop is totally unusable due to lag. Working on 16 bit, ProPhoto RGB,  over 1 Gb files, on Mac Pro with 64 GB memory, running MacOS 10.12.6.
Switching back to CC 2017 to meet deadlines.

they are idiots who release software without even testing it lol.  next they will release software where the brush tool doesnt work because they dont even try brushing before pushing a new release out.  The people who make the software obviously dont use it

The bug is present only for a small number of users. Myself and all the retouchers i know aren't seeing the issue.

Stop being such a drama queen and just use CC2017 until they fix.

Eartho, +1 for no drama please...
But 82 voluntary reports is not a small number for a bug (go look at past bug reports), it's reasonable to expect adobe to have caught this one. But they didn't, they're human, so hopefully they can figure it out soon.

> Paying monthly for a service comes with certain expectations, one of which is with a dedicated steady stream of income, innovation and reliability should be expected.>

I'm pretty sure we can say that about any software we use. In this instance, unfortunately no one tested the workflow that gives rise to the problem. The individual tools work just fine, but in combination go haywire. Or perhaps there may be more than one issue, depending upon OS and computer and. . . It's unfortunate, and something no one, least of all Adobe engineers, want to have happen. They're not the company and they don't make a living no matter what they do to the customers — and actually, neither does Adobe, and the management knows that.

At least Adobe, perhaps with the historical knowledge that these types of issues do arise, made it very easy to re-install if you were an early adopter and/or you fell for the very bad design of the CC app that uninstalls your previous versions by default.

But tell me how many people don't depend upon the OS they run? Windows forced an upgrade that left people unable to use the software they needed, tried to root out 3rd party software that blocked Windows constant effort to force the update, and their latest version just came with big warnings about the BSOD that they might well get if they updated.

Apple doesn't let you get earlier versions of their OS if you want to install not the latest, but the next to latest, for instance, and you haven't already installed it on at least one machine. Updates get released with warnings about Mail becoming unusable all the time for the past several versions of the OS, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I update with trepidation no matter what the software I'm updating because a few decades of this, I know it's always perilous. My hardware, my OS, my installed apps, my workflow is different enough, I can have a problem where 9/10ths of the rest don't even notice. I've been months late to the party just because I've been in a project with a deadline where I couldn't risk updating, so regardless of a lack of uproar over the update (when does that ever happen?), I held off.

But with Adobe, one doesn't have to. They've made it so the versions are sandboxed well enough, they run concurrently. You can have the latest and the one before that and the one before that, all installed. Maybe that leads to them rushing features out the door a little too quickly because you can always use an earlier version. I honestly have no clue about that. But they do provide you with a cushion.

Getting mad at them because it's subscription software is another matter. Paying monthly has nothing to do with it.  If I have a bug in my workflow with software that has a perpetual license, I've paid, I don't get my money back, and I can wait just as long if not longer for it to be fixed. It's simply a separate issue from there being any bugs at all, regardless of how serious. It plays a part in innovation, obviously, though for better or for worse depends upon how you view it, but it has no perceivable role in bugs getting into the world. If that were the case, then the opposite, Apple's OS which is free, ought to be bug-free, no? They have no monetary incentive to push it out to us too untested, do they?

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for the feedback - it has been very helpful. We're working on an update to address this issue in the near future.

I understand some haven't had success with the workaround and wish to go back to the previous version. The concern I have heard from a few is that their previous version of Photoshop has been deleted. That shouldn't be a problem. Launch the Creative Cloud and beside Photoshop choose the drop down menu and select "Other Versions" to install a previous version.*

Thank you for your patience.

Michael, this isn't a LR thread and i'm thinking that Hannah probably wasn't responsible for "breaking" LR. If you're having so many issues with that app which others aren't, perhaps the problem is on your end?

While I don't share your experience with the new Lr classic I have been repeatedly disappointed with several CC updates pushed to the public, because of the more expedited time line Adobe has put it's self into. This promise for faster updates is causing to be unstable, because of the limited amount of testing. Lr classic however, has plenty of time to have been made ready for the public, so I sympathize.

With that being said please don't hijack this thread. Start a new one dealing with your specific issue, so that it can be deleted with constructively.

I'm in the same boat as everybody else here. I rely on this application to keep my business running. This issue has caused me a good degree of anger and productivity loss over the last few days...... As a gesture of good will from Adobe, to it's Photoshop users (just to show you care), some sort of recompense on the subscription or such like, would not go astray. I cannot believe this new version could have been released with such a basic and fundamental flaw in a tool that most retouchers use daily.

With OnOne pushing their increasingly competitive product hard at the moment, it won't take much of this sort of rubbish for customers to move on, and try different software to get the job done.

As it's been said earlier, if you use PS I any professional capacity you should know not to jump in on important work. Install along side a version that works well and test when you have time. I installed CC 2018 and after 5 minutes of slow healing brush I checked the feedback site, saw it was an issue with the update and went back to CC 2017. No productivity lost.

Why am I paying for this when it doesn't even work?? Why are we the testers? Don't you guys have a bunch of software developers and testers you pay to do this work? Essentially, the users who pay a monthly fee are testing your broken software. I don't see how this model does anyone any good. Lose-lose.

Not sure what I've done but I've managed to get it working. Turned off the smoothing, and also the laser line thingy in the brush tool. Reset workspace (annoying, lost all my keyboard shortcuts I'd created), but for now it's fine. I am finding ACR to be behaving weirdly and it's quite slow. hopefully there'll be a fix soon, although I'll wait for the rest of you to test those. ;D

I too seemed to sort out the smoothing and the healing brush now working (so far)
Also had really slow responses using ACR so after an online chat to adobe was able to revert to ACR 9.12.1 much happier now!

Hi Stephen,
I'll copy / paste what Stephen Newport says below...

The bug seems to be caused by smoothing on the *brush tool.* So click on the brush tool, turn smoothing down to 0% in the tool bar and "off" in the brush panel, and healing should resume normal operation, or it will not screw up if you do that first when you first open photoshop.

So forget about "healing" for the moment and go to the Brush tool - and set smoothing to 0% and in the brush presets, uncheck the smoothing box.

Hope this helps... really frustrated with this update - it is not fit for purpose, and I can't use Bridge because Web Galleries are gone!

I really can't but repeat that Adobe don't seem to relate to real professional photographers and retouchers - those who live off their work!

Hi all, I'm still not entirely sure what change I made to get the Healing brush back to some form of usability, but from memory one of the things I tried was reverting to legacy brush presets... (along with the other things mentioned by others here). Just thought I'd mention it incase it has anything to do with the problem.
Although PS is a tad more usable now, it still has a bunch of other issues, and I'm finding the clone tool can sometimes hang, and it takes about 5-10 secs before I can continue.

Weirdly I'm in the same boat, after much changing of settings yesterday, and multiple restarts........... I've started it up today and the healing brush is working fine now. I'm not sure what fixed it in the end.
After many years working in Photoshop (since P.S 2) I have never experienced this level of 'rush to market untested' approach that we are currently getting with the CC updates. Adobe, you've got a lot of bugs to fix.

The fix Hannah illustrated doesn't seem possible. I can turn smoothing off, but the spot healing brush (and standard healing brush, which is also brutally slow) have nothing to do with smoothing.

Step 2 says,
  1. When spot healing tool is active, drag smoothing to 0% (Image 2).
This is physically impossible, as the Options panel doesn't display smoothing when the spot healing tool is active! In the photo Hannah shows, she is clearly on the standard brush, not the spot healing brush.

Am I missing something??

I should mention that in general I think this is a very good update. Path colors are a great, if long overdue, addition. And large brushes work much faster on large files. Copy-and-paste layers is helpful. I'd prefer not to downgrade...

It's ok, I think you're just misunderstanding the temporary solve. The bug seems to be caused by smoothing on the *brush tool.* So click on the brush tool, turn smoothing down to 0% in the tool bar and "off" in the brush panel, and healing should resume normal operation, or it will not screw up if you do that first when you first open photoshop.

I understand that (although how smoothing on the brush tool affects performance on the spot healing tool I don't quite get).

What I don't understand is in Hannah's order of operations, it tells the user to drag smoothing to 0% when spot healing tool is active. This is a seemingly impossible task.

I've tried this fix by just turning smoothing off on the brush tool and unfortunately I seem to be one of the ones who will need to wait for them to update PS.

As a professional photographer who needs to have Photoshop as a business critial tool, I am totally sad about the latest healing brush lags. I have 5 MACs from 2011 to 2016 and all are having this bug. Also the update to MAC OS High Sierra did not bring any improvement.
Please stop implementing unnecassary gimmicks as video help and concentrate to stability and reliability -please!
I went back to CC 2017 which works better on all machines.

No guys, smoothing set to 0 and restarting Photoshop or whole computer does not help. After 3-5-7 minutes working in Photoshop Spot healing brush or Lasso Tool start freezing again.
So until this issue solved I've deleted CC2018 and come back to CC2017.

I just let PS CC 2018 update and tried to turn smoothing back on to test the issue. Well it was working for about three or four minutes and then not just the Spot Healing got laggy, but all of PS became nearly unresponsive for five to ten seconds after anything I did(open menu, change tool, save file etc.).

Here is my System Info but right off the bat the patch that  Installed today only states 19.0 not 19.0.1

Yeah, i just started getting hit with this last night. It's looking like there's a pretty serious vram leak coming from somewhere.

If you suspect a VRAM leak, can you disable the GPU (uncheck Use Graphics Processor in PS performance preferences) and see if you can still reproduce.  We thought we had this issue addressed, but apparently not?

Thanks Adam. I'm getting ready to work on a bunch of images, so i'll turn that off and see if i can repro. Last night when things starting slowing down, i checked my vram usage and it was maxed out. Restarting PS emptied the memory and the issue was fixed when i started working again.

Thanks for the response Adam. I haven't looked at my vram usage, but I'm noticing it most with ajdustment layers turned on I think. I know many adjustment layers can degrade performance quite a bit, but this is with only a few. If it happens again I'll disable GPU (although I can't stand that 'fix').

Still having problems with this (as mentioned in the last few posts). I've been using the 19.01 version for a week or so now, and while it's a bit better in some ways, the sudden lag just pops up every so often. My workstation is very well spec'd, but you'd think I was trying to retouch on an old cheapy. My old Mac running PS6 is performing better. When it hit's, I basically have to sit here and leave it alone for 20-30 sec's for it to come right again. Bloody annoying !

I haven’t had chance to test fully so far. Will do this week and report.
But I had this exact same with first version of 2017 , it would just freeze for 30sec to 2 mins .
It was so annoying and embarrassing when you’ve got a client sitting in with you.
- and you’re on a £4000+ new MAC PRO.
Check it’s not something to do with auto save being set to every 10mins I think by default .
And try open GL prefs.
That’s all I could think it was Or some terrible caching scripts.

I have a question for you all that are experiencing these intermittent hangs. I initially thought this was still a bug with the healing brush, but I think it goes beyond Photoshop. When I am at work and am loading images in from other network drives I get a total hang in all Adobe programs that are open (mainly Photoshop, Bridge, and Illustrator) if someone on the network shuts down their computer for the day, or some other glitch in the network occurs. However, If I close Bridge It will instantly free up Photoshop etc.

I feel like many of the hang issues are related to the way the Cloud system connects to these apps. Because I rely heavily on Bridge I always leave it open while working. So, my question is basically to know if all those people experiencing hangs use Bridge and if you jump over to Bridge during these hangs is it also unresponsive? Also if you are working in an environment where you are accessing files from network locations?

If there's any correlation than I will start a new thread and see if Adobe can get to the bottom of this. I want to say that I've been having this issue since CC2015 bit it has become more frequent, and yes it is embarrassing to have this happen in front of a client.

Interesting thoughts Douglas. I just had another slow down, and went straight to Bridge, but it did not seem to be affected.... I have bridge open all the time whilst working also. Will keep a close eye on this though.

No bridge open here, and no network transfers or writing of any kind. When Lightroom syncs to the cloud things slow down considerably, but that's not happening much on my end.

> . So, my question is basically to know if all those people experiencing hangs use Bridge and if you jump over to Bridge during these hangs is it also unresponsive? >

For me it's Bridge that is unresponsive, not the other apps. It's just tolerable on an SSD (not good, but tolerable), but my desktop computer is older (soon to be mothballed, hopefully) and it's awful on that. I frequently have to force quit after the first launch of the day (I, too, run it all day long, using it extensively most days), in order to get it to start responding in any reasonable amount of time. It also hangs badly if left neglected for too long. I've wondered if it's related to having Firefox open most of the time as well, or if it might not have something to do with the Purge cache after X days command. I haven't been in the mood to troubleshoot more, but I think I'll turn off the Purge cache command and see if it doesn't improve, at least in returning to active duty after sitting idle, since that's when it's supposed to purge cache.

I'm afraid if I'm doing a lot of work with numerous folders, I'm unfaithful enough to 2018 to go back to 2017. No prize for speed there, either, but it doesn't hang while opening another folder for exceptionally long periods of time. I really wish Adobe would recognize the importance of Bridge and throw sufficient resources at it to redesign and fully modernize the app. They treat it like the unwanted stepchild instead of a critical bridge between all the apps.<sigh>

As for PS or CR, I didn't experience any serious lag until I tried mixing brush types. I'm not experiencing any slowdowns now, but I'm still on El Capitan.

So far I've been lucky... issue resolved after turning off smoothing, and still fine after 19.0.1!
Couple of thoughts though... I too have bridge open all the time, all work is on a series of thunderbolt RAIDs  and there are several Macs on the network (does this count as network?)
However I'm using Bridge 2017 (can't update lack of web galleries)
I also downgraded to ACR 9.12 - while using ACR 10 I had all the symptoms, freezes, unresponsive, and had to force quit over & over again!
So it seems to me as though there may be many issues at play here, and please Adobe, this isn't an attack, we all want to get to the bottom of this.
Finally, it's great to find so many who use Bridge "all day every day"!

I went back to 2017  - won't upgrade until resolved. I didn't soup up my machine for speed only to have it feel like a G3 ... this bug can turn 5 min into an hour...
