Lightroom Classic: HDR merge fails to import final image - error

Selecting multiple photos and running an HDR merge with or without a preview consistently fails with the error "An Internal Errors has Occurred. Failed to import the final merged image."

This happens on both MacBook Pro laptops that I have tested my catalog on. One with 8GB of RAM the other with 16GB.

Can try tweaking the options in the merge preview window and zero out any setting which is causing this failure?
Additionally, try performing the HDR merge using ACR plugin and lets us know the results?

I turned off, auto align, auto exposure and no ghosting correction in the HDR preview, but get the same error message. 

I am not sure where or how to use the ACR plugin that you mentioned. Can you tell me how?

Every series I try. From 2 pictures to 4 in a series. I have tried with NEF files and JPEGs

So I did some more testing here, and it turns out, I am able to do an HDR merge no problem if I move my raw picture files to my local hard drive and them import them into LR from there. Normally I have all my pictures saved on a share that is accessed from my Mac via Samba. I have never had issues in the past with access. 

Is there something that would be stopping LR form being able to access the share because it is not local to the laptop?

It should work with external drive. Make sure there is no file permission issue that you can read/write to the external drive.

Well, you would think that a linux admin would think to look at file permissions first... 

I correct the permissions and the HDR and pano merges are working as expected now. Thank you!

It is easy to test if permissions are the problem. Just try to make a file on that external drive with another programm than Lightroom.

If your external hard drive is NTFS formatted then you need additional software on your mac to write to it. This software could be lost somehow.

When it's ExFAT then you should be able to write to it as is.
