HDR Merge hangs Lightroom 6.3

Hi
I have just upgraded to LR 6.3
I have successfully done merges using 3 or 4 photos (RAW NEF files) from my older D7000.
But with my D800 (large image files) I have tried to merge 7 RAW files but it is so slow and ultimately I have to intervene to stop it which then takes ages! Finally I have to get out of LR and reboot my PC.
Maybe 7 files is too much but hey whats up - this sucks.
LR 6 is rapidly becoming my worst enemy since IO am not getting any benefit from the upgrade only problems.
My PC spec is :
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
64-bit Operating System

Your title says it crashes, but your description just mentions it being slow. Which is it? Hangs/freezes are completely different things from crashes.

And why are you having to reboot the system? Just force quitting the application should be enough, unless there is a problem with the system (like a bad disk).

Ok - well once the HDR Photo Merge is begun you have no idea what is going on the progress bar gets up to about 60% then sits. Eventually you figure (10 minutes or so) something is wrong so you press Cancel. Nothing happens.
Next step is to try to recover the PC which to me is a crash.
After a long time when you do get LR to quit you try to launch LR again. Now LR is super slow and again no info .. so reboot time.

I have now fond for sure it is totally impractical for me to do more than 3 RAW files.

No, that is a hang or freeze. It has nothing to do with a crash.

I don't care what you call it (and I do understand software development) but as a customer I don't expect that kind of reaction from software which I paid good money for. Yes I'm pissed off.

Normally if you expect that a process may not complete or will take a lot of time you warn the user, keep him informed, and give him a "Cancel" that actually works.

I have no problem with 4-6 files. In the other thread you posted, I recommended a reset of your preferences. Did you ever do that? It might help this issue as well.

Hi Rikk - I have no other problems with my upgrade to LR6.
It may be a performance issue though I think there is nothing wrong with my PC spec. I do find that a merge of 3 photos is OK though very slow. Merges from photos taken with my D7000 are so much faster.
I find it so much better to export to either Nik HDR Efex Pro or to Photomatix both of which work much better and faster. So its a bit of a downer for LR6.

I repeat: Did you ever reset your preferences?

Rikk -
This method you described:
1. Close Lightroom
2. Hold down [Alt]+[Shift] and launch Lightroom
3. Overwrite the preferences when prompted in the dialog.
... Did not offer the preference reset you talk of. But - I am now wondering whether I must try "AltGr" key instead of "Alt" given that AltGr fixed my other problem i.e. [AltGr]+[Shift]
I will try this when I get back to my home PC and feed back.
Thanks
