Elements 2010 allowed you to select multiple files and then go to the menu and scroll down to Remove Tag or Remove Tag. Sometimes you make mistakes. Sometimes you want to remove a subset. Whatever. I don't know when this function was dropped, since i have not upgraded since 2010, but 2020 does not offer it and it is a step backward. It's dead simple. What is the downside in offering it?

You mean Elements 10 (issued in September 2011), there has never been an Elements 2010 version. The naming with years started with Elements 2018, which is version 16; the current Elements 2020 is version 18.
That means that you are on the last version before Elements 11. PSE11 did introduce a new way to manage events, people and place tags in there own categories (to integrate face recognition and geotagging another way).
However, the old way to manage events, places and people is still available if you want, that's what I have chosen (I don't care for geotagging nor face recognition).
Your problem is that the catalog conversion towards PSE 2020 assumes you agree with the new classification and that you want those new categories to be managed separately. As a result, that conversion has moved the events, people and places tags into other categories and you can no longer use the same ways to delete tags by groups like before with standard keywords.
What is dead simple is to fool the conversion by renaming in PSE10 those master categories to different names like 'My Events', My People', 'My Places'. Then you convert the catalog again, and the tags will remain standard keywords as before. To convert again, be sure to tick the checkbox to show 'already converted catalogs' in the catalog manager.
