Lightroom Classic 8.2: Gray Screen (Windows)

It was suggested I post this here rather than the Lightroom community page.

I am consistently getting gray screens when I use the Develop module in 8.2.  This worked in previous versions.  When I select a tool such as crop or graduated filter the image turns gray as soon as I attempt to make the adjustment.  I have observed that the adjustment is actually made, I just can't see it.  Selecting previous image and then returning causes the edited image to reappear.  I have made videos of the crop and graduated filter examples.

 



 

 

I have installed latest video driver and Windows 10 1809.  I have GPU turned off.  I have tried all the suggestions I can find on this forum.

It looks like a new v19.3.3 driver was released on 3/20/2019.

Thanks, I just updated to latest release for my card, but it was not this one.  I have the AMD Radeon HD 5800 series which is not one that is supported by the above driver.

The 5800 series is ten years old: https://www.cnet.com/news/amds-new-ati-radeon-hd-5800-3d-cards-first-to-market-with-directx-11-suppo... It appears that AMD last updated the drivers three years ago.  LR pushes the limits with its use of graphics drivers and trips over many bugs in them that most programs don't encounter.  

That's why one of the troubleshooting steps provided by Adobe is to force LR to use the DirectX, which is generally more bug-free than the (faster?) methods LR prefers to use to access the display.  Your System Info above appears to show that DirectX is disabled.  Have you tried enabling it, as described in step 3 of this help article:

I see that on this machine, Lightroom is activating the OpenGL for the GPU acceleration. Try the Solution #3 described https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html to try to coerce Lightroom to run with Windows DirectX when possible. Your AMD Radeon HD 5800 was released by AMD in 2009. I am not holding my breath for it. But it worths a try.

After the procedure and relaunch Lr, does Lightroom still show using OpenGL in the Lightroom system info like the following:

If so, your only known workaround at this point is to turn off the GPU acceleration from the Lightroom preferences dialog.

You could also try update your Windows to see if there is a DirectX driver update from Microsoft.

Already tried this, installed the Oct 2018 update, AKA 1809 and all other updates.  No change.  Thanks for suggestion.

Simon,  I also tried step 3 in https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html.  This is so frustrating.  I didn't make any change to system and now both LR Classic and new LR fail trying to edit photos.  New LR gives black screen as soon as I click on an image. Wondering if they share a code base.  https://youtu.be/c_eaVskD32Y

On the other hand, Photoshop has none of these problems.  Can crop same images there to my hearts content with no sign of problems. AND Photoshop says it's using my graphics processor!!!!!

Also just tried Adobe Camera Raw.  I cropped one of these photos with no problem, saved as a DNG file and opened with Lightroom.  When I "Develop" this DNG file I get gray image as soon as I click on crop tool.  Click tool off and picture returns.  Watch video!

It felt like a driver (DirectX & OpenGL) issue to me if the only change that you did is configuring Lr to go through different acceleration method.

Note that GPU mode in Photoshop has different requirements than that of Lr/ACR. Even the ACR case, the crop implementation is different enough. Lr rotates the image instead of the crop bound itself.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Problem seems to be resolved for now.  A clean installation of the same AMD driver I have been using solved the problem.  I didn't think this was necessary, shame on me.  Hopefully whatever caused it won't happen again.  I've removed the above videos from YouTube.

Glad you got it resolved. Obviously, users shouldn't have to deal with flaking installation issues -- AMD and Windows should do better.  And this whole thing with buggy drivers takes us back to the bad old days of Windows in the 1990s.

I still wonder how I went down this rat hole.  I had some initial issue that was intermittent.  Tried a number of things including reinstalling driver without the clean uninstall and updating windows to the October 2018 release (1809).  Wanted to get the improvement to Futaba Raw processing anyway that requires 1809.  Something in these steps made everything worse.  

Must be my day for head banging, just spent hours fixing outlook that had a hidden read receipt that was somehow misaddressed from Nikon of all people, that was causing an error that blocked sending my email.  That's a story for another day.

Good to hear your GPU issue got resolved after a clean AMD driver install. In situations like this, I always recommend doing a clean driver install. Previously we had experienced Nvidia driver issues that went away after a clean driver install. It looks like a similar case but AMD driver is involved.
