when editing in a layer mask how do i use the gradiant tool to mask off small sections of my photo. example i added a levels correction to the over all photo, but now would like to mask off the darker areas of the photo to block the effect.

Which application are you using?
In Photoshop: make a selection you want to apply the gradient in, then use the gradient tool. Or just paint in what you want for the layer mask.

figured out what i was doing wrong i needed the gradient to be set in foreground to transparent. thank you for your help.
