Lightroom 6/CC: In Develop module, I see a blue background, not my image (Riva Tuner issue)

  • 9
  • Problem
  • Updated 3 years ago
  • Solved
  • (Edited)
When i select an image from grid mode and press 'D' to go into the develop module, instead of my image in the main area I get a blue background with a white cross through it.

I see all the develop tools on the right, like Basic, Tone Curve etc, but no image. Just the blue area!

Viewing the image full size (Loupe) in Library module is fine, but as soon as I try to Develop, boom, the blue screen with a white cross.

I feel I must have clicked something innocuous by mistake, but now I cant get back to normal.

Hi Nick,

Short term workaround.

1. Launch LR and open preferences.
2. Switch to the Performance tab
3. Uncheck/disable Use Graphics Processor
4. Click the System Info button and post here what is reported under "Graphics Processor Info: " This will help us with troubleshooting the underlying issue.
5. Restart Lightroom

Hope that helps.

Regards,

- Chris

Well, unticking the 'Use Graphics Processor' made the image appear instead of blue, so that's a win in itself ! thanks

Thanks for the information, Nick.

Please review the GPU FAQ here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/...

It's possible you may need a driver update for your graphics card.

Thanks. I read the FAQ and checked it all out. Came up blank.
OpenGL is okay, as Lightroom reports "Check OpenGL support: Passed" and "OGLEnabled: true"
There is no motherboard GPU grabbing the action - I checked Device Manger at the GTX970 is the only GPU listed.
And my graphics driver is up-to-date (I would love to be there when the 'check your drivers are up-to-date' advice actually does the trick/the user doesnt have the latest drivers!)
I have MSI Afterburner running, but I cant see that getting in the way. I guess I can try uninstalling it.

Interesting.

If you don't mind, would you please download and run the test utility in this thread and submit your log to Eric Chan's (Adobe engineering colleague of mine) email listed in the thread?

Thank you!

I found Eric's post. The download link to the utility is no longer up, but reading more it seems he has taken many logs from other people with the same/similar issue and is working on it, so I am happy to wait.

Ok. So I exited my MSI Afterburner and RIVA Tuner applications from the system tray, and I can now click the 'use graphics processor' and the Develop image does remain now.

Just sliding a few sliders around, it does seem faster and smoother to render the change on screen now.

Yep, just confirmed that again. MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner running - bad. No MSI + RivaTuner - good.

Bit more digging... Its the RivaTuner that's breaking it. Fix: add the lightroom.exe file to the list of applications and set the application detection level for that to 'None'

Ha, what's sweet is that I have my MSI Afterburner up showing me clock and memory speeds on the GPU, and they ramp up to full as I move the sliders around ;)

Thanks Chris Castleberry: I needed lr 6 because I had just bought the Canon 5ds r and lr 5.7 would not load the big files at all. So when I got the big blue screen in the develop module there was some bad language. I like your short term work around ,it works. but why is this Short term,? G T Aldrich

This is key and one semi-nice thing is on/off of the OGL support seems to be real time.

Also LIGHTROOM DEVS PULL YOU HEAD OUT. If some OGL feature is missing TELL US. or better yet, map them to NVIDIA and AMD control panel.

OGLEnabled: False is often with which settings are set in Nvidia control panel.

That sounds like you're running into an old video card driver bug -- you need to update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website to pick up the bug fixes made in the driver to fix this issue.

BTW - the driver doesn't tell the host application that it is not drawing correctly, and simply failed to draw. Thus the application and developers had no way to know that the driver was misbehaving until customers reported the problem (and updated their drivers to fix it).

I purchased Lightroom 6 and just installed it on my new computer (Jan 2016). Had an empty blue screen with NO white "X" when in the development module - no image displayed. Clicked on preferences and unchecked "use graphics processor" under the performance tab. That seems to have fixed the problem. Is this a permanent fix?

I'm having this same problem, and a lot of this vocabulary is foreign to me. Does anyone have some lightroom for dummies version of how to fix this problem with the big blue screen in the develop module?

Go to Lightroom's Preferences > Performance tab and uncheck the Use Graphics Processor checkbox.

If that doesn't do the trick, go to Help menu > System Info and paste the contents so we can see which graphics card.

This issue is a result of old/bad video driver or an unsupported graphics card.

First, if you're on windows, update your video drivers. Determine what video card you have and go *directly to the manufacturers website (nVidia or ATI/AMD)* and download the latest driver.

Just doing Windows Update won't give you the latest and greatest drivers. You must go directly to your card manufacturers website to check for driver updates.

If that doesn’t solve it, go to the Preferences in Lightroom and uncheck “Use Graphics Processor” under the Performance tab and restart Lightroom: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html

Its a poor show if ADOBE do not support common video cards?  Disabling GPU acceleration is so yesterday and sort of suggests that the new wave of ADOBE Devs are not up to the job?  Bad drivers are another thing completely.
Either it is bad drivers, unsupported graphics card or ADOBE Devs poor programming..... I know who my money is on?

I should add both myself and my wife gets graphics issues in LR CC, LR 6, PS 6 and PS CC yet we are different graphics cards etc.  Only common component is ADOBE.  Man up ADOBE and fix this.

Thanks for the feedback.

Would you mind sharing the specifics of you and your wife's graphics card setups (card model, on-board memory, driver version, bit-depth settings, operating system, etc.)?

The wide variety of graphics cards, drivers, version of shader language, etc. on the market are a bit of a moving target when building code to work across them all. Also, we don't always have every available card setup/configuration in house for testing. It helps us when we receive feedback on specific setups to be able to identify issues in either our code and/or with the cards/drivers.

Regards,

- Chris

my wife has a GTX 970 and I have a GTX 760ti we both have 16gb ram and i7 processors.  We both have latest Nvidia drivers as of yesterday and run on Win 10 PRO 64bit fully up-to-date as is any ADOBE software we use.

Thanks. Other than a ton of 3rd party plug-ins, things look pretty normal and up to date. What are the specific graphics issues are you currently seeing? Camera Raw and Photoshop use slightly different graphics acceleration implementations. Are you getting a blue background in Camera Raw/Lightroom? Scrambled images in Camera Raw/Lightroom? Any issue in Photoshop?

In Lightroom library in single image view moving to next image can give a blue screen eventually replaced by image, Also get occasionally, image appearing in blocks perhaps 6 blocks? Both of us get this.

Unfortunately I have been forced to move on from LR on my new work.  I can't immediately remember how long version 6 of LR has been out.  But the continued slow down of LR has had me move to another raw editor.  Currently I am exploring Capture One.

I have 14C/28T CPU that avg. 3Ghz as there are always a few CPU's doing nothing.  It has more to do with total TDP (power).  It is set up to always use max TDP, meaning run the CPU Clocks as fast as possible on all active cores.

I have a 980 NVidia GPU
I have OS and Camera RAW cache targeted to this NVME Samsung 950 Pro (2GB/sec reads/1.5Writes)
I have LR previews are going to SATAIII 1TB drive 500MB/sec R/W.
The Raws are on a 6TB 200MB/s seq. reads.  << If you are not reading the file in a seq. manor you are blowing out Windows FS optimizations.. You should be opening them as Sequential.

Capture One uses ALL my processors ALL the time!!!!  LR does not, it is almost impossible to ever see it use more than 4.

I have ask in this thread or similar topic for any hints to the preferences file to alter this and see if it helps.

Even editing my old T2i (18MP) raws, is extremely slow.  This is with or w/o using the GPU, W or W/O using the smart Object optimization editing feature.

If Adobe isn't still so arrogant to take a suggestion;  Assign some soft. Eng.  to work with NVidia, AMD and MS to find out where the hold up is.  Adobe can consult with the GPU's mfg. to write correct shader routines.  That don't crash (TDR) the graphics driver with the OS.  I suspect but haven't enabled yet this the way the desktop seems to keep being redrawn.

How many people have complained over time and yet no change.  You blow off the perf complaints as individual system issues and some could be.

Now I suppose this is a test to Adobe's integrity to see if this post remains.
