LIGHTROOM: getting at my JPEGS to use or develop (taken in NEF+JPEG)- can only access NEF(not helping me at all)!

I'd like to scream. I am desperately trying to like light room, which I do visually to look for what I want but the file structure is making me bonkers. It never seems seemless but I work around.MY PROBLEM IS- while I started recently taking photos in nef+jpeg mode...and i've seen the jpeg versions before--they are gone! They still list as being both, I can find metadata saying the jpeg is sidecared (though I am having trouble with this concept) I can't get at it. I can't take my files to developer or use them in photoshop elements 10. I dont' EVEN want to try to learn photoshop cc when LR is not going as easy as I hoped. I tried th plug in converter thing in elements and either I did something wrong or it did not work. I just want to be able to use my photos that I need for a project that I need to print :(

Preferences>General>Import Options>Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos - make sure this is checked.

My brain hurts so much I can't remeber if I changed it late last night or it was checked but IT IS checked. There are two versions with different names both say nef+jpeg and when i click on an image it shows as NEF at bottom. Is there anything I can do to use the file? should that checked box be allowing me to see NEF on one photo and JPEG on other (my recall is that is how it was last week?) but even with box checked not doing it now

That checkbox only affects new imports after you enable it.

so if it says it's sidecared does that mean I can never get at the jpeg again? IF so how can I get the net into a usable format- now that I have screwed up? Andwhy did it change. They were side by side last week? I did not change my camera or lightroom since then?

The only thing i have done is organize photos.

REally I just need to use the pictures today- I can't beleive that isnt' possible, or what would be the point of NEF. How do I get the jpeg separated or convert the nef to usable file?
I have the side by side checked but don't remeber if I check it last night or not? IT definietely had them seperated last week??

Thanks- I am very amateur. I took some poorly lit photos and was kind excited the raw made them look better- but I couldnt' export them to photoshop elements anyway so ??? I attempted to make sure the plug in was up to date but no difference.

The two versions of the file seem to be an original name and a renamed-upon-import name, not one an NEF and one a JPG.

But it says NEF+JPEG?

So is there any way to use them? to seperate out the jpeg? to convert if no jpeg is there (even though it says jpeg)?

If the box is checked why is it no longer showing them side by side? Bottom line can I do anything to fix it?

The NEF+JPGs are your master photos, to make JPG copies you use File / Export and specify a folder to put them, in. I always export my JPGs to a subfolder of the master-photo folder so I can find them, easily, again.

I never shoot RAW+JPG and always just create my JPGs from the RAW files.

A normal workflow would be to adjust the raw images in LR before creating the JPGs so you have perfected them beyond what the camera would do.

Okay this might make sense to me.

So if I take only RAW (which is NEF), I can see them in LR. the ones I would use to develop or work in PSE- I'd export to another file outside LR?

I just tried it when I say export original file it says the jpeg version already exists? but I cant' get to it and when i drag to printer it does not go. When I drag to PSE it says not recognizable file.

I am pretty sure I just want bother with RAW but I just want to use my file now.
shouldn't the jpeg show up if the box is checked?

In case anyone else has found them saying words (outside or inside)- I found the solution-

http://www.lightroomforums.net/archiv...

basically- click on file where your NEF+JPEGS are coupled>right click> syncronize folder> seperates them out to jpegs and NEFS

Thanks for the input I'm sure it's hard to understand what us retards, I mean inexperienced are trying to ask in the first place

Export to a subfolder underneath where your master photos (the NEF+JPG) in this case, are. This are a pair of options at the top of the Export panel: Export to same folder then put in a subfolder of that.

If you want to work on the photos in PSE, then you can, one-by-one, right-click on one and do Edit in ... Photoshop Elements.

As was said, above, the Treat RAW & JPG as Separate Files only affects new imports, not ones you've already imported in a particular way.

Indeed it won't "retrofit automatically", but as ann said, it *will* affect already imported files when you do a folder sync.
