This is one of the least intuitive programs I have ever used. Will not do even the simplest of tasks I expected. Frustrated, going to something else now, not Photoshop.

Which program were you using?
Photoshop is not super easy to learn, but many people do find it intuitive because it works similar to other applications and to real world image tools (darkroom, cameras, etc.).
Photoshop Elements is the easy to learn and use version.

Annette, Photoshop is indeed a professional level app, that evolved a lot since its creation, it is unfortunately not an application that is mastered overnight, due to its depth and width (it can work for forensics, fashion, photo, design, architecture, medical or scientific tasks... you name it, Photoshop will do it!)
But there are many venues to find some help: did you take a look at the many videos on http://tv.adobe.com?
If you hit F1, you will have the help files, and can even ask questions there, or on the official forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/pho...
Feel free to add a discussion there about what you struggle with, many other users will be there to help you!
Photoshop is also the application that you will find the most info or books written about, other apps are not so documented.

FWIW, I recently taught a class over at Craftsy.com. If you know some
basics of Photoshop, this will take you to the next level. I go over a
layered workflow, retouching, masks, clipping masks, and troubleshooting
tips - Here is a $10 off link - www.craftsy.com/ext/JoshWithers_10281_D
