Frequency Separation Problem

Hi. Mine is a Frequency Separation problem. I was following a tutorial how to do FS. Everything went fine until it was time to smooth out the skin texture on the High Frequency layer.  I tried using the clone stamp, then the brush tool on the HF layer.  Instead of correcting the skin, it leaves a bright orange-red glow with every click of  my Wacom stylus. I have tried other FS tutorials to no avail. In the tuts that instruct you to use the lasso tool to correct an area of the skin,  what happens is the selected area appears untouched until  Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur is applied several times. At that point,  rather than correcting the skin, the selection of skin looks more like the make-up was removed from the model in that the skin begins to look pale and then the selection turns darker with each Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur. What am I missing/doing wrong? I thank you in advance for your expertise and for taking the time to shed some light on my problem.

That sounds like you are in the quick-mask mode and are painting your selection mask, not actually working on the layer itself. At least, that's what the bright orange-red highlight would indicate.

Hotkey to switch between quick-mask mode and normal editing is "q". Try that.

As for the other issues, that's a matter of what technique is being used. Instead of using gaussian blur, try surface blur with the threshold turned way down between 2-4 and adjust the radius to see how it looks.

Max, I appreciate your help. You were right about the Quick Mask being enabled. Now there's a new problem, the Quick Mask appears to be the default. I can disable it but as soon as I click on a layer, it is enabled again.  Also the program is no longer allowing me to run an Action that I have previously used. I've deleted and re-loaded the Action and when I attempt to run the Action it only performs part of the Action and I get an error message: The command "Select" is not currently available.

That can happen if you don't have a background layer or if it expects you to name it something specific before you start the action.

Hi Sherry,

sounds like you are stuck in the middle of unfinished action.

maybe you can try another FS action and leave it finish without any errors.

You should be able to switch between quick-mask and normal mode at any time by pressing "Q".

and remember to switch your Clone Stamp Sample Mode To "Current" instead of "Current & Below" or "All Layers"

wish you luck
