Elements 8 Freezing in Windows 8.1

My Elements 8 programme (Proper English spelling) was running perfectly well in Windows 8 including opening and processing Canon EOS 300D RAW files. Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, it loads the RAW files BUT then freezes and the only way to overcome this is by restarting the computer. Please help me (I cannot afford Elements 12, as I am on "Pension Credit").

Does elements freeze (which just requires force quitting the app or waiting for windows to terminate it), or does the whole computer freeze (which would require restarting)?

As far as I know the whole computer freezes, at least I don't know how to quit the programme.

If the whole computer is frozen, then you're looking at bad hardware, a problem in the OS, or a bug in a low level driver.
Applications cannot freeze, reboot, or shutdown the entire computer.

If pressing Control-Alt-Delete doesn't bring up the Windows task manager, then the machine is hung/frozen. And you quit the program from the task manager.

This I'm afraid rather proves my theory, that experts don't really stop to think that those who ask the questions are NOT as "up" in the subject as theh are themselves.
Please explain in plain English what exactly you mean and give details as to how to perform the clean-up.
Many thanks.
