Frame Tool. Feature Request Need a visualization tool for adding a picture frame around my painting photos.

I have a feature request for the Frame Tool. i am an artist and need a visualization tool for adding an actual picture frame molding image around my painting photos.

My clients frequently find it difficult to select a frame for their painting.  Selecting a custom frame in a frame shop requires them to be able to visualize from a corner sample what the finished frame will look like. Then they are not sure what to framed painting will look like on their wall.

What artists need to help their clients is a feature in the frame took that would a photo of a section of the frame molding that could repeated around a photo of the painting.  An automatic cut-and-paste.  The program would need to know the width of the frame molding for proper scaling and it would also need to know the finished dimensions of the painting so that the molding could be properly scaled relative to the painting.  A 3 inch wide molding will look quite different on an 8 by 10 inch painting than it will on a 16 by 20 inch painting.

Images of the frame molding could be taken off of the internet or they could be directly photographed.

This will give an exact image of what the final framed painting will look like.  This could then be superimposed on a photo of the clients wall so that they could wee exactly what the framed painting will look like when hung.  It should also be possible to accurately scale the framed painting photo to the wall dimensions.

A few frame shops have software that does this, but their selection of frame styles is limited and the software is expensive.  There is one software that does what I am describing, but it is no longer supported, so it would be unwise to purchase it.

This would be a popular feature for artists, professional photographers, interior designers, as well as for homeowners.

I would love to discuss this with the Adobe engineers to help develop the specifications.

Michael, I will support you for this request because I would like to see such a tool also.  I would like to see Photoshop do this.  I've been wanting this type of tool for my photography company.  But there would need to be a separate database of frames to choose.  The database can be an add-on or plugin but Photoshop should do this.  If not we need another frame software that has support as you suggested.  BTW which software did the frames for frame shops?   I don't want to run a frame shop, I only want to show customers what they could be getting.  But I am curious what software the frame shops had through the years.

I hope we can get Adobe to start a project like this.  I used to be an engineer before I retired and can help them with defining the specifications for such a project.

The idea is that any image of a frame section could be used.  It would be best at high resolution to give more scaling capability.

Michael's has a program that does this with their frame moldings.  I haven't seen it in use though.

Google "picture frame visualization tool" and you will find quite a few.  (I see that this post is already number 6 in the Google results!  Their crawlers are fast!)

The least expensive one is "Custom Framer" from ArtFramer.com.  I think it's about $125 for individual use, but it is now unsupported.  They won't even answer questions.  Their more expensive software was sold to frame shops.  I'd rather spend the $125 on paint.  They have a free trial that you might want to try out.  It might even be worth $125 to you.

Here's the trial demo link...  http://www.artframer.com/Downloadlogin.asp

Thanks for that information I will keep it nearby when I have time to check it out later.  It's good to see another engineer here.  I'm also an engineer (MCSE) as I lean toward the network side.  I get busy with a lot of networking everyday.  I had old programming with old software and a little SQL programming, I don't think SQL would be a good for this, Microsoft made it too bulky.

I've been wanting this type of thing for a long while. Not sure if Adobe would take pointers from a non-commissioned engineer.  They have their own in California.  Seattle has their development center, as all the companies collaborate here.  I used to mingle with them in a nearby coffee shop.  I haven't done that for a long while.

Any idea what we can do to sell them on this idea?

I was looking into their scripting languages for doing this.
that might be possible.  Of course, in my engineering career I hated for someone from Accounting or wherever to say "But all you gotta do is..."  followed by something that would take 6 man-years of effort!

I don't have a person or title to write to.  Do a little more research on adobe.  Maybe director of development or VP Technology.    Not sure if the senior adobe employees will know.  The Champions won't know, I used to be a Champion but was too busy in business at the time, and I never had this info.  I may know a few employees here but we'd be better to write to a person who can get this going so it doesn't make loops for a few years.
