Lightroom Classic: Fotos synced to iOS App are replaced with old photos from the catalog

Unfortunately, it seems that since a recent update there is a horrible bug in LR Classic; it seems, in the following circumstances newly imported photos are replace in LR Classic after the sync over the Cloud:

1. Photo is taken on iPhone and imported to LR iOS via the "import from camera roll" feature (and shows correctly there):

2. Photo is synced to LR Classic (over the Adobe Cloud)
3. Instead of the newly imported photo, a new file with the data (image information and EXIF info) of an old file is imported (or more precisely "created"), if there exists already a file in the catalog with the (original) filename (e. g. "IMG_4209"). On the other hand, if there doesn't exist a file with the same (original) filename, the photo is imported correctly:

4. The photo of the cloud is replaced with the (wrong) new file, however, its preview still shows the correct photo:

Additional information:
  • I am using LR 8.3.1 and the LR iOS App 4.3.2 55A26D on an iPhone XS Max
  • I have already reset all synced data of the cloud and re-synced all data
  • There are no applications such as Dropbox changing the files in the LR data folder
  • I have the option "Automatically write changes into XMPWrite changes to XMP-Files" activated.
  • I periodically convert all photos (also JPG-files) to DNG files (in order to have all data included in one file) and subsequently delete the original files (mostly JPG-files).

Thanks for any advice; this issue is somewhat frustrating, as this (obviously) causes a data loss.

What are the photo file names?
IIRC Apple's iPhones seem to save images with the same file name. Like IMG 001, 002, exct.

Thank you for the reply. The photos are named with the pattern "IMG_[NUMBER]" (e.  g. "IMG_3485").

Hi Sebastian,

From what I understood from the message is, say there is an old file in Classic, with a filename (eg : IMG_01.JPG). You sync a totally different image from phone which also has the file name IMG_01.JPG, the phone image is downloaded into classic and is replaced with the already existing file in Classic, and classic uploads the existing file. Thus you are seeing the Classic image in phone, instead of seeing the phone's image in Classic.
Is this understanding right?

Also, was the image in Classic synced or unsynced ?

Could you please send both the images to me (haarithg@adobe.com), so that I can try to investigate?

Thanks,
Arjun

Dear Arjun

Thanks a lot for your reply. Exactly, this understanding is right. Interestingly, it doesn't make a different, if the old file has already been renamed; LR Classic "finds" the old file even after the old file has been renamed (with a rename template within LR Classic), e. g. if there is a file with the original filename IMG_01.JPG which was then renamed to 20180101-194566.JPG (without the original file name in it) the old file will be "found" nevertheless.

Yes, the old file was synced back to the Cloud in LR Classic.

Thanks; I have sent two example pictures regarding which this issue occurred.

Thanks a lot and best regards
Sebastian
