Tried to use this guide https://github.com/fontello/fontello/... to use fontello font in photoshop but every time I try to change the text to the custom text it defaults back to Myriad. Any ideas? I'm trying to use fontello for web design.

Sounds like the font it created has problems.
Please contact the makers of the fontello app for additional troubleshooting.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with any ttf from several sites I've tried: entypo, icofont, etc. I can't seem to get any ttf to be loaded as text if it doesn't only contain text. Google fonts works fine though.

Photoshop will read valid fonts, but there are a lot of incorrectly written fonts out there on the net....

Are you sure the characters that you are typing into Photoshop exist in the font you are using?  Many fonts only contain limited character sets and Photoshop, in order to protect users, automatically substitutes to a "known good" font if a given glyph is missing.  This setting can be turned off, if you would like, under Preferences > Type > Enable Missing Glyph Protection.

I'd be happy to work with you on this more if you have more information.

Thanks,
David

I somewhat found a workaround although it does seem unusual. I would initially use the type tool and select the custom font and when I begin typing it would revert to either myriad or my last known font, open sans. When I am in the type box I would change it back to the customized font and select another area to type(creating a new layer) and I would then finally be able to type in the customize font.

I repeat these steps every time I need to use the customize fonts.

Thanks David for the suggestion I will post results when I get a chance.
