Lightroom Classic: I cannot move a sub-folder with photos from from one folder to another

Suddenly within the last week or so in LR Classic (7.2), Library mode, I cannot move a sub-folder with photos from from one folder to another. I get an error, "Could not complete the folder move. An unknown error occurred." It doesn't matter if it is a newly created folder or an old one. I also cannot rename a folder. The catalog has been optimized, PC (Win 10) rebooted, 12GB RAM and usage is 65% of that RAM.

As an example, I can create a sub-folder "B" inside folder "A". I can create another sub-folder "C" inside "A". I cannot move B into C or move any of them to another folder. I can create and move empty folders, but if it has an image in it, it can't be moved around. I can move images from B into C, but I can't move folders.

My workflow is easiest when I move folders and I've been doing it this way for over a year. I don't know what may have changed.  I'm looking for ideas so that folders can be moved or renamed in LR. I can close LR, go to Explorer, move the folders, reopen LR and then "find" them for the directory but that is not what should be required.

Hi Andrew,

I couldn't reproduce that behavior on my machine. Perhaps resetting your preferences might help.

I was not familiar with that but it made no difference. Whatever it is, a folder with images cannot be renamed or moved. I have some workarounds, but it bothers me that this basic use procedure doesn't work. If it had anything to do with a Win10 update, I'd think others would have the same issue.

I'm not sure where else to go for help. It's beyond my skillset.

Daft question, but have you tried rebooting? It sounds like another program is hanging on to a file which is preventing LR from moving it.

I restarted the program, then rebooted the PC. I also ran LR both as an administrator and then with a separate administrator account, adding just a few files so it was a different catalog as well. It's got to be a LR issue because I could create an empty folder, move it around, but if I put an image in that folder, suddenly I can neither rename it, nor move it.

I appreciate the help though. If there are any other ideas, I'm open. I'm wondering if I need to uninstall LR, then reinstall, test with a new catalog, then link to my existing catalog. That would be a PITA though if I have to reinstall all my presets and I'm not sure how it would handle showing my Smugmug galleries.

I've read there were no limits on the number of files in LR and that it really doesn't slow down with more and more images. Interestingly, this started soon after I hit 100K. I like having all my files available for searching. If I'm looking for some image based on my keywords, I don't want to have to repeat the searches for each catalog. On the other hand, if that is my issue here I'll figure a way to split it.

I can assure you that the catalog size is just a coincidence. My catalog contains 170,000 images and I don't have these problems. There are photograhers with even much larger catalogs.

DING DING DING. I figured it out when I thought again about the time frame and remembered my new AV program. I was testing a new anti-virus program to see if I wanted to switch from my current and - Malwarebytes was my issue. As soon as I turned that off I had my functionality back.

LR appears back to normal, and my test of Malwarebytes is done too. Thank you all for taking the time to assist me.

I'm running both Malwarebytes and Norton Security on Windows 7 using LR 7.2 with no issues. The most likely cause of the issue you are seeing (Could not complete the folder move) is due to the destination folder permissions set to 'Read Only.' OS X and Windows 10 updates have been know to change folder permissions. If it happens again try manually changing permissions on those folders to Read & Write.

It must be some other combination because I could create a folder and both move and rename it, unless it had a photo in it. With Malwarebytes off I have no issues. In any case I’m glad my issue is resolved.

I'm running Lr 7.3 on a new iMac Pro and encounter the same issue: unkwoned error message when trying to move folders. No anti-virus or any other software running (that I can see). It's a new machine, so other than Adobe CC nothing else was installed practically. Restarted the computer as well. Catalog is roughly 200k pictures. Did anyone find another viable solution?
Thank you!
