What is the difference between "Flatten Image" and "Merge Visible"?

I auto aligned/blended 10 raw files.

Flatten Image produced a 120mb PSD file

Merge Visible produced a  266mb PSD file

Flatten will merge all layers and turn these into a background. Merge visible will -as the name suggests- only merge visible layers. The file remains layered, even if you did not have any invisible layers.

Thanks Johan. I should have specified that I flattened/merged the same 10 layers so I expected the same file size. All 10 layers were visible

See the edit I just made. Merge visible will keep a layered file.
