Lightroom CC 2015.8: Fit to Screen behaviour has changed

"FIT" to screen

At least on my Mac, in previous versions of Lightroom, images smaller than the screen were left scaled to their actual size (1:1) while images larger than screen size were scaled down to fit the screen. Since upgrading to Lightroom CC 2015.8, images smaller than the screen size are scaled up to fit the screen. Was this a deliberate change in the behaviour of "FIT" or is this incorrectly scaling up small images. This change makes small images like patterns expand to the point where they are so pixelated that they are hard to see and continually having to press the spacebar to switch between 1:1 and FIT depending on the size of the image seems unnecessary (at least to me). Some may like all their small images expanded while others may not, so if this was a deliberate decision to change the behaviour, it might be a good idea to give an option to have it behave either way.

Yes. This change is intentional. See the release note https://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2016/12/lightroom-cc-2015-8-now-available.html and some of the feature requests https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightrooms-hidpi-retina-support-doesnt-work-w....

The hovering mouse cursor will indicate the zooming behavior if you single click in the loupe, whether it is zoom in with a (+) cursor or zoom out with a (-) cursor.

You can try the following workaround to revert back to the old zoom-to-fit behavior.
  1. Open Lightroom.
  2. Invoke Lightroom > Preferences... menu command
  3. When the Preferences dialog appears, select the Presets tab.
  4. Click on the button labeled “Show Lightroom Presets Folder...”
  5. Lightroom will reveal the root preset folder in the Finder/Explorer.
  6. Now goto https://adobe.ly/2qiy4gf and download the config.lua file and copy it into the Lightroom sub-folder that Finder/Explorer selected at step 5. The config.lua file will instruct Lightroom to fallback to the old zoom-to-fit behavior when dealing with smaller images.
  7. Relaunch Lr. If you did step 1 though step 6 correctly, you should see the following entry reported in Lightroom's System Info dialog. If you don’t see those entries, then make sure that you copied the ‘config.lua’ to the correct Lightroom folder at step 6.
Config.lua flags:
ZoomPictureView.disableMagnificationInZoomOutView = true

     8. Remove or rename the config.lua from the Lightroom preset folder if you prefer the new behavior again.
