Photoshop CS5/Firefox display conflict

There appears to be a conflict between my Firefox (13.0.1) and Photoshop CS 5 on my Windows XP machine. Photoshop works fine, but then if I close it and open Firefox, the whole screen, images and all, begins to break up making it unusable until the machine is rebooted. At first I thought my graphics card (NVIDIA) was at fault, but the problem is more likely with Firefox, since I don't have this trouble usings the (much slower and clunkier) IE Explorer from Microsoft.
Any solutions?

What OS version are you using?

Are you up to date on Photoshop (12.0.4 or 12.1 at a minimum)?

Have you updated your video card driver from NVidia lately?

And the latest Firefox does have some problems - so there could be a video driver conflict related to those issues. But the underlying cause could involve FireFox or Flash Player plus Photoshop.

What you're describing is some sort of corruption in the display state, which would have to involve your video card or driver.

Something to try is disabling the GPU support in Photoshop (in preferences) then relaunching Photoshop and seeing if the conflict still occurs.

Thanks for the response. I'm running XP Professional SP3, Photoshp CS5 12.1 x 32 (which I'm told is the latest update) and have installed the latest drive for my NVIDIA card, which is a GE Force 8300 GS installed by Dell when I bought the machine (Inspiron 530) in 2008. My Firefox is 13.01, the latest version. Firefox updates itself automatically, and I don't remember when it last did so; it may be that the latest update is the problem. I suspect the problem is with Firefox; I don't have this trouble with IE Explorer.

How do I disable GPU support in Photoshop? Unless I'm blind, or being really stupid (possible) under CS 5 Edit/Preferences, I see absolutely no reference to GPU, either as to enabling or disenabling it.

It's not a live-or-die problem. I can still use Photoshop normally, as long as I remember to reboot the machine after I shut the program down. But if I shut it down and then use Firefox the problem returns. And this is a fairly major inconvenience.

My CS 5 was bought as an upgrade to my earlier CS4. I tried opening CS 4 to see if that gave me trouble, but it won't work, and I assume that during the upgrade process it was disabled. When I try to start it, it tells me to reboot the machine, but that doesn't do any good either. It returns the error message 148:3
the only reason I've kept CS4 on my machine at all is that I assume it has to be there in case I ever have to re-load the CS5 upgrade. Maybe I'm too cautious and i could just get rid of it.

PS Am I the only person who finds your sign-in system enormously frustrating? I'm told I need a verification code to sign in to something called Get Satisfaction (a misnomer if there ever was one?) and then the code doesn't work we're not dealing with military secrets here, despite all the many levels of security.

The GPU checkbox is in the performance panel of the preferences dialog.

The upgrade has nothing to do with it.
And CS5 would not be disabled by the upgrade, sounds like something else damaged part of it's files.

You just need your Adobe ID and password here - just like the user forums (but it keeps a separate browser cookie because it's a different site).

Thanks -- I found the GPU checkbox, but it's unchecked, so presumably that's not the problem.
A little while ago I had a blue screen crash after closing CS5 and opening Firefox. It told me that the faulty file was nv4___disp. I looked in my NVIDIA folder and found four files answering that description, but they all seem to be part of the upgraded driver.
I think I'm going to try a new graphics card and software; I'm told that these cards sometimes fail. I hope that's it. May I get back to you if I still have the problem? I hope I won't have to, but who knows?

The bluescreen means that there is a problem with the driver.

Have you told NVidia about this problem? They might already know about it, or they might not and need more info to solve it.

And of course you can come back if the problem persists.

Have you tried turning off hardware acceleration (Options>Advanced>General) in Firefox ?

I think the problem has been solved by installing a new video card from ASUS. I have no idea whether the original problem was a malfunction in my NVIDIA board, or a conflict between the NV drivers and Firefox and CS5 or any combination of those, but in any case the situation seems to be OK now, and both CS5 and Firefox are working with each other.
