Elements 8: Files being renamed "edTMP"

I using Photoshop Elements 8.0 and I'm operating Windows 7 PC (ver 6.1, SP1).
After I run "Auto Smart Fix", multiple files get created for each picture; the original, the edited version, and an "edTMP" file. This happens to all photos after using "Auto Smart Fix".
I have two questions. First, what is the "edTMP" used for and how do I stop it from being created? I find it annoying that I have to keep deleting all these "edTMP" files. Second, when using the "Auto Smart Fix," is it possible to save over the original? I know this can be done in photo editor but I don't see any way to change this in the preferences in photo organizer.
