Files saved in PhotoShop 6.0 won't open

I am using PhotoShop 6.0 on a Windows 10 computer. I know it is an ancient version, and that it's supposedly not compatible with Win 10, but it does everything I need and it works fine under Win 10 most of the time.

Sometimes when I save files I can't open them in any program including PhotoShop itself. The problem happens sometimes, but not all the time, and it seems to occur regardless of the file format of the saved file (psd, png, jpg, etc.). Sometimes the file will save properly after repeated save attempts.

When I try to open such a file in PhotoShop I get the Could not open "xyz.psd" because it is not a valid PhotoShop document error.

When trying to open jpg, png, etc. files I get a Can't read file header! message in IrfanView, and similar messages in other viewers.

If the problem happened all the time I'd have to accept that PhotoShop 6.0 won't save properly under Windows 10, but since sometimes it does work ok, I'd like to understand what's going on so I can try to work around it.

Any ideas?

sounds like you may have a disk or memory issue that is causing file corruption.

Not likely. Reasonably new computer with no other issues that would suggest disk/memory problems.
