It would be awesome if in lightroom I could automatically rename files based on the collection they are in. It's frustrating that the folder name can become part of the filename, but the collection name cannot. This would be an awesome update

What if the photo was in more than one collection - how would you want it to handle that?

I suppose you could just only allow renaming by collection when currently in a colleciton and rename it to the current collection name

Are you talking about renaming source files, or renaming exported files?

I assume you mean the former (sources), but both can be accomplished now with the help of plugins. Let me know if you're serious about doing the renaming before this feature is added to Lr native.

I was originally thinking for exported photos.

As a wedding photographer, I'm always making collections and collection sets to hold client work: Tim + Eric as a set, and then Ceremony, Reception...etc as collections.

I haven't been using the publish feature because A) I don't want to rename my source files, and B) I'd need to make a different publish preset for each collection, so what's the use?

If the export file naming convention allowed for Collection Hierarchy to be built into the exporting, I'd be such a happy camper.

As it is now, I can work around it by storing source files in descriptive folder structures, but it's still a redundancy that feels clumsy.

Thanks for the conversations!

Hi Joe,

If you use Exportant's custom file naming along with built-in Hard Drive export service, you can use the collection name in your export filenames, e.g.

*** Exportant ***

PS - you don't have to make a different publishing "preset" for each collection, nor do you need to rename source files, if you're clever enough ;-}.

e.g. Exporder

So far I've done a sorta lousy job of explaining it, but I think it'll do what you want (documentation to be improved ;-}).

supports publishing into folder hierarchy that matches *non*-publish collection set structure.

You only set up one publish service with one (e.g. smart) publish collection (which defines the photos to export) which relies on your regular collection set for defining hierarchical export structure. - or did I misunderstand your "pickle" (jam)?

Instructions: insert post-process action like this:

and another like this:

Note: "Another" copy can be your "only" copy... (long story)

Edit settings & save, export or publish...
