Lightroom: File renaming schemes for HDR and Pano changes

Both Lightroom (desktop) and Lightroom Mobile use file naming schemes that severely limit the automatic file renaming options, namely preserving the original file number.

For example, an LR mobile HDR is named "APC_1234-hdr.dng" and the automatic file naming feature is unable to extract the original file number from this filename. Another example would be the "-pano" suffix that is added by LR on the desktop for files that have been merged to a pano.

Ideally, either the file naming for these special files would be changed to put the "hdr" or "pano" suffix BEFORE the original file number, or the automatic file naming feature needs to be enhanced to automatically ignore these suffixes, and consider them part of the original file number.

Thanks for the consideration.

So very true - I've actually stopped renaming my files now(as I tend to want to do this at the end of my edits or on export) and if I choose to go with JSY_(original file number), the edits which are HDR, Pano etc, don't retain the original file number. I think even the ones that were exported to Photoshop has the same issue so I end up with JSY_5674, JSY_5675, JSY-edit_1.. or something of this sort.

You're right, the suffix that is added for an external edit is another one that breaks LR's own capabilities.

Just fishing for info here: how do you feel about the -Edit Suffix on Edit In items? Does it cause the same grief?

Hello Rikk - and yes, that's essentially the same issue.

Well, perhaps not on the same level since I *try* to rename my files on import usually (not possible with LR mobile). However, when I import a large batch of images from a memory card I might have to do it at a later point - and then indeed any suffix is a problem when it keeps LR from finding/extracting the original file number (which I guess is something that a lot of photographers use one way or the other to create a more or less unique identifier for photos).

This is typically not a problem for me since the original photo has already been renamed as part of my import process. I don't ever go back and rename after importing so suffixes are just fine at that point in my workflow.

However, in the case of HDR images captured on my iPhone using LR Camera the supplied templates simply fail to work correctly. I can get it to work if I substitute a period (".") for the dash. So you end up with APC_1234.hdr.dng. In this case it will find the sequence number and retain the correct extension.  But I think it may loose the "HDR" designation in LR CC Mobile.
