Lightroom: File naming / re-naming feature would be much better if it was like the one in Bridge

There is a feature in Lr that I would like to see improved, and that is the file naming / re-naming feature. I think it is not the greatest. I find myself going to Bridge to re-name my files and then syncing them in Lr.

When you hit F2 to re-name, the naming field is not populated with the name of the current image. So, even if you want to correct a spelling error or add a single digit, you have to re-type the complete file name. Also there are many more advantages to the Bridge system such as find/replace. I would love to see the Bridge file naming software used in Lr.

Thanks,

Tom

Have you discovered that you can rename directly in the Metadata panel on the occasions you want to correct a spelling error or add a single digit?

I would love to have the string substitution feature from Bridge added to Lightroom

Would love to hear back from Adobe on this one. Still interested in this change, or at least why it's apparently difficult to include it in Lightroom CC Classic

As a workaround while waiting for that feature, you can use the Search Replace Transfer plugin to do string substitution on a batch of filenames: http://lightroomsolutions.com/complex...

I'd, also, like to see the Bridge Batch System incorporated into Lightroom (or an improved version). Also, being able to batch-rename folders would be handy.  The main thing I'm looking to have added is "string substitution". This would really help to correct or change file names (spelling errors, formatting).

One issue I have with the LR "Filename Template Editor" is in the date field you can't, as far as I'm aware, have a separator (ie, "-" or "_") I find it easier to read with a dash or underscore. With Bridge's 'Batch Rename' I do a string substitution to get the underscores between the YYYY-MM-DD when camera files are just YYYYMMDD.

Does the Bridge and Lightroom 'Batch Rename' operate in vastly different ways? Perhaps, once LR is managing the files it is more complicated with changing metadata?

Probably wouldn't make a big splash in an update but would help in workflows. Thanks!

It's straightforward to do that using the date tokens of the filename template editor:
