Photoshop: Make the poly-lasso capable of doing curves so I can directly create pen-like selections.

I know, I can make selections with the pen tool, drawing paths and converting them to selections is clunky, especially if I want to mixed curved paths with an existing selection.

It would be perfect to have a simple universal lasso tool.

A poly lasso, that can draw curves by clicking and dragging (just like the pen), and can freely switch to the normal lasso with a keyboard shortcut, right in the middle of drawing my selection.

with a tool like this I can turn all these multi-step processes into a single step.

Hello, did you try to hold down the ALT(PC) or Option(MAC) key down as you use the polygonal or lasso tools? It lets you switch to freehand lasso. (If you use the lasso tool holding ALT/Option switches to polygonal.
not exactly what you requested ( a mix of the pen tool and lasso tool) but it might still help...

all this time, I had no idea you could do that. Cheers. If I could do perfect curves I'd probably never need another selection tool again.

Glad you are almost all set, btw, my answer was missing the word "magnetic" between "or" and "lasso"...

Try the ALT key (and other modifiers) everywhere in Adobe apps, it is the make better tool!

So based on what you described, you would just use the pen tool to draw a path. Then whenever you're done making the path for your selection, just press CMD + RETURN on Mac or CTRL + RETURN on Windows. It automatically makes the path a selection.

If you use the Freeform pen tool, and freehand draw a path but press option while you have the mouse button down, it becomes a straight segment pen tool. Then you can clean up all those path points with regular direct select tools.

I do what you described all the time, and you're right. It's the one stop shop for making manual selections. Just use that pen tool, and quick key convert it to a selection. Boom!

that's very close to the tool I'd like to see. if I could draw bezier curves on the fly, in addition to freehand drawing and straight lines, it would be perfect.

The freehand tool is a bit awkward with the way you need to drag, press and hold alt, release mouse to start a line, click and hold at the end of the line, release alt to continue freehand drawing.

A simple version of what I would love is freehand pen tool, and tapping alt simply toggles you to normal pen behavior where you can do lines and perfect curves. Then tap alt again if you need to return to freehand selecting.

And to take it one step further, it'd be nice if I could bypass the ctrl+enter step entirely since all I'm ever using the pen for is selections. For example, in the toolbar a the top where you see pen options, and a dropdown for path or shape, there could be another choice called "selection" and as soon as I complete my pen loop, it becomes a selection.
