Lightroom Desktop: False Duplicate

I'm importing an old set of NEF files into lightroom and a few of them lightroom won't import because it thinks it's a duplicate. It's not a duplicate and I can't force it to import anyways.

Ideas?

According to this page if there are dupes you can rename the file. This doesn't work for me. It will let me select the photo on the import panel but at the end of the import sequence a new popup shows up saying that 130(!) photos were identified as being dupes.

Can you go to Help>System Info... and get us your exact installed Lightroom Version number?

Ok. Lightroom CC 2.2.1 uses a unique Hash to identify duplicates unlike Lightroom Classic which uses a combination of file name, size on disk and creation date/time. 

My first step would be to verify by date (capture date on the NEF) and double check the All Photos view sorted by date to make sure they aren't already there.  If they don't show up in the desktop app, then I would look at your cloud storage via http://lightroom.adobe.com and see if they appear there.

I looked at it on the desktop, ordering by date and on that link. I can confirm that the photo doesn't exist on either of them. Yet still says it's a dupe.

Ok, here's the crazy thing. I tried using that URL (http://lightroom.adobe.com) and it actually added the photo!

There has to be something wrong with the desktop editor. Also, it's infeasible for me to upload all these photos on the web.

Lightroom Web does not have duplicate detection which explains why you were able to upload via the web and not your desktop. 

Since yours is the sole report of this behavior, I would recommend resetting your preference file and seeing if the duplicates are falsely detected again. 

A Preference File will survive a Lightroom uninstall/reinstall. Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences. 

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom. 
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

I just started using Lightroom CC and in one import I had several hundred duplicates!!!! No record now of what wasn't imported either and no way to ignore duplicates. So now I have missing photos.


All files had different names, so no idea what it was saying was the duplicate.

I am also getting false duplicate errors.  Source file example: 100_0031, 100_0032, 100_0033, 100_0034, etc. Of those, 100_0033 was flagged as a duplicate. If I search catalog, that filename cannot be found.  I'm getting hundreds of false duplicates out of some 85,000 files.

Lightroom Desktop does not rely on filenames to detect duplicates. It creates a hash of the file to determine duplicates.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_function

You might try searching using Sensei for the contents of the file by its visual description to narrow down your search.
