Lightroom CC: Failed migration - how to start over?

So my migration attempt ended in a huge mess. First the migration itself crashed with an unintelligible error when it came to migrating albums. My guess is that since I imported my old Aperture library back in the day that it created a very messy album structure I never bothered to fix. Maybe that caused itDespite that photos still were uploading until also this came to a screeching halt (see here https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom-cc-syncing-forever?utm_source=notification&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=new_reply&utm_content=reply_button&reply[id]=19088587#reply_19088587)

Frustrated I went ahead and stopped the migration. But now what. I still got 500GB worth of photos in the cloud. I went into LR Classic and cleaned up the folder structure. But I cannot restart migration with that catalog as it says I already migrated this one. Now ok I could export my complete catalog in LR Classic into a new one (which should be identical in content) and start migration with that one again.

But what would happen to the pictures already uploaded? Would these be automatically connected to the new catalog (so just referenced)? Or will it upload all pictures again so I end up with a 30k double pictures?
Is there a way to completely reset my LR CC cloud to 0 and clean out all data and then start over?

FYI I tried migration again with a very small new catalog which I exported in LR Classic (400 pics). That ran trough just fine. So generally migration seems to work.

If anyone knows how I can salvage this mess that would be very much appreciated. Or should I just cut my losses and leave it be and just use LR Classic? But then again, it always tells me that the catalog is still in migration and I fear if I switch sync back on it will end up in a huge mess.

How do I just dump all the stuff on the cloud (catalog, photos everything) in the trash???? I don't give a damn anymore about Lightroom CC I am just beyond frustrated and fed up.

I just want my old system back!!!! Just Lightroom Classic with the ability to sync smart previews again without it telling me all the time that it has an unfinished migration going that went to hell.

Please tell me how I can do that.

How recent is your most recent Lightroom Classic CC backup?

If you make a copy of the Lightroom Classic CC catalog that says it has a migration in process, does the copy give you the same error?

When you launch Lightroom Classic CC and get the error message, can you cancel the error message and continue or is it stuck?

Well I made a copy of the LR Classic catalog I unsuccessfully tried to migrate via the finder. I opened that one in LR Classic and get the same error message as I get with the original.

I can simply click 'don't enable sync' and then I can work in LR Classic. But then I don't have any sync to my iPad, Apple TV etc. anymore

So, you can still work in your catalog in Lightroom Classic? If so, that is good. It kind of makes the other questions moot.

Have you reviewed this help doc - does it contain any solutions for you? https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/kb/migration-errors.html

Hi Hannes,

I'm so sorry you have had so much difficulty with Migration.

I have shared your issue with our engineers and they have some things for you to try. Here is what they shared:

In order to get Classic back to a working state, we’d recommend:

  1. Delete any data in our photo cloud that you do not want to get pulled back into Lr Classic. Specifically, we want to prevent the half-synced library from syncing back down into Lr Classic. To do so, sign into https://lightroom.adobe.com/ and either:
    1. Select the album(s) you want to get rid of, hover over photos to show the selection checkboxes and choose Delete, or
    2. From the Lr icon in the upper left, choose Account Info, then choose Delete Lightroom Library.
  2. In Lr Classic, when you get the warning about the migration-in-progress, choose to “Enable Sync Anyway”.

If you want to try the migration again later, we’d recommend you wait for the upcoming 1.1 release where we’ve fixed a number of bugs with migration. Then you would want to remove the 'Lightroom Library.lrlibrary' bundle from your Pictures directory before trying again.

I hope this helps. Let me know how it works.

Take care,

Rick

Hi Rick,
thanks so much for your help. Finally I am getting somewhere again.
So fortunately I had never synced classic after the failed attempts so my classic library was still 100% intact. The only thing was that I uploaded some pictures from my iPhone after the failed attempt which of course were not in classic (because no sync) and only in the could. I went into CC and saved all these images and videos to my HDD.
After that I took option 2 and completely eradicated everything on the cloud. Man that felt good :) Finally a clean slate and now I can start fresh.
I went into Classic, everything still fine in there. I enabled sync no problems. Synced one album into the cloud to see if it worked, took some images from my iPhone directly to the cloud. Waited for the sync, everything works like a charm.
Then I imported the images into Classic which I saved earlier from CC. Now these are also in Classic so all images there safe and sound.

This being said I am finally a happy camper again.
And thanks for the tip I will most certainly wait for 1.1 before I try this again. Also I will do some more housekeeping in my Classic library, especially the albums before I try anything again

Any ETA on 1.1 already?

Thanks again for your help!

That is great to hear, Hannes! I don't have a specific date for the next release but it is soon.

Cheers!
