LIGHTROOM Face recognition and cropped pictures (faces outside displayed region)

Hi,

There seems to be a conceptual problem with face recognition and cropping. Lightroom detects faces in areas that are not visible according to the cropping. Since the detected people go into the keywords, this may cause problems later (Hey, I was on this image and you cropped me out? Hey, why does google find this image with my name tagged but I am not on it?).

Should I report this as a bug or is it a feature?

Best

Stefan

PS: If this was a bug and fixed in future releases this would be really cool because then face recognition adds value. If I tag my pictures without face recognition and then recrop, I would have to adjust the keywords manually. With face recognition this could be done automatically. Great!

I'm going to switch it to a feature request as it was intended to work this way (but I'm inclined to agree it would be better to have a choice).

Unlike other applications, Lightroom is a non-destructive image editor. That means no matter how you crop, transform the images, the face detection only need to happen once. Lightroom will keep track for the face region transforms while it is still inside Lightroom.

However, upon export, Lightroom will skip writing out face regions whose center lie outside the cropped image bounds.

Well yes, but when I am searching for images in my database I do not want to get all those images where somebody happens to be around in the invisible area. An option to exclude these would be great.

I want Lightroom to ignore pictures outside crop. This request was posted in various ways 3 years ago, but doesn’t appear to have gone anywhere.
Example: I take pictures at my kids’ althetic events. Many faces in the crowd/audience get the box with suggestions to fill. I have to delete all these before a crop the image, otherwise the faces remain active but “hidden” outside fo the crop. If I do all the cropping with the face detection turned off then apply face detection, it still highlights those faces. To undo these options I have to un-crop, delete, re-crop. I can go to the naming page where all unnamed faces appear, but I sometimes I have to go through literally 100s of faces to find the ones that I do want to name. And.... the naming page does not show the faces with tone adjustments from Development module. If they are dark, I cannot recognize them.

The new face recognition software is scanning faces outside the crop boundaries. I take photos of dancing events and there are always many faces in the audience that I crop out, but Lightroom CC is scanning and identifying faces in an area that I am not interested in which is why I cropped the photo. Lightroom should ignore faces outside the crop boundaries. Also, when I click on unknown faces, Lightroom shows me the face, but I cannot see the face in the photo because the face is outside the crop boundary. This is very confusing.
