Eyedropper on black background is picking a grey color instead of black. OSX Mavericks

When I use the eyedropper tool manually or by pressing ALT with the brush to color pick, when I pick the color from the black canvas it comes out as what looks to be a 50% grey instead. It will not pick up the canvas color. When I sawy canvas, just to be clear as I might be using incorrect terminology. It is the area outside of the document Im wrking on. So if Im doing an illustration in black and white, I work with a black background under my document with all menus turned off so I can easily just alt-click in the black background area off the document and it will pick the black color. Now it jsut picks a grey color though even though it appears black. I am on an iMac using a Cintix 21ux with the latest drivers and the latest version of OSX Mavericks. Also using latest updated Photoshop CC. Thanks.

P.S. This is on my home office computer. I am in an office this week using photoshop CC on a PC and do not have the problem, so Mac related maybe?
