Lightroom 4.1: exporting images from and back into a catalogue

Hi
We are just about to travel for a week, and I also need work on the images from a recent festival shoot (two days of images >50Gb !), so I need to take those 2 days worth of images from my home PC onto my laptop (to edit them when away), and then recombine the edited images back into my overall 2012 catalogue when we return (phew!)

Any suggestions on the best way to handle:
Exporting the images for use on a separate machine
recombining to the main machine later
for a very large number images like this
(using Lr 4.1 on both machines)

Thanks in advance

You need to follow the File / Export as Catalog and Import from Another Catalog route.

Export as Catalog creates a mini catalogue with the originals (negatives in the dialog box) which you can move to the laptop. Afterwards, use Import from Another Catalog to bring this updated mini catalogue back into your mainone.

Test it out first. It's meant for your kind of requirement.

HI John
that all makes sense thanks.

What I'm concerned about is the following when I import the images back into the main catalogue on the PC;
Will I get duplicate images once they've been edited in any way? (i.e. does Lr "know" how to avoid duplicating the images?)
If I've deleted say 30% of the images in the Laptop mini-catalogue, what happens when I re-import this mini-catalogue? will it remove from the main PC catalogue the images I have deleted from the mini-catalogue (if that makes sense!)

Thanks in advance

That's why I say test it out first. One needs to see the Import from Another Catalog step is a lot cleverer than you may imagine. It actually uses the filenames to match images from the mini-catalogue to those in the main one, and will update those which match. New images (shot while you are away and added to the laptop catalogue) will be imported.

As for deleting, the workflow struggles with those, as you seem to sense. Import from Catalog won't know that they should also be deleted on the main system. So what I would do is not delete - instead, use a reject flag or colour label to mark items for deletion on the laptop. When you are back in the main catalog, these marks will show which items should be deleted.

Thanks, I'll give it a go (very carefully!)
