Lightroom: exporting images with NO "-" in the new created name...

hello!
I am a sports photographer and use adobe lightroom since 5 years to import the pictures on my laptop and to edit them. and i also to export of the edited fotos in a new folder...
I am very happy with all functions - except a problem for me:
if I export a picture, I would have to name them in such a way, that the name i choose for the photo is followed by a sequential number like "001" and te next picture is automatically 002, then 003 etc.
unfortunately lightroom names the picture to "myname" 001, then, however, next to "myname" 001-2, then "meinname" 001-3. the prblem for me is not the number, but the "-" between the name and the number... because of this process i have to reopen the pictures in another program and rename them there, which costs a lot of time...
i wonder if there would be a possibility to export pictures without "hyphen" ("-") and with a three-digit sequential number?
i asked the adobe support for help but they told me (2009) that there is no way to do that... maybe things have changed or can be changes with the next update?
i know this is only a very specific and "small" problem, but for me it is very important...
regards
oliver

Lightroom is supposed to only append the -{number} suffix to avoid naming conflicts.

If you choose export filenaming that results in unique filenames without the -2, -3, ..., you should not have this problem, unless you are exporting to folder that already has files with the same names, in which case consider the "Overwrite WITHOUT WARNING" option in the Export Location section of export dialog box (Existing Files:...). Of course you wouldn't want to overwrite files unless they are newer renditions of the same files - that's where the proper (unique) naming comes in...

?

Hint: You have to edit and save a file naming preset in the 'File Naming' section of export dialog box, and make that file naming preset part of the export preset as well.

Can you post a screen shot of the Filename Template you're using during export like this:

@ rob: i do the file naming in the export box... but this is where my problem starts: for the foto-agency i am working for the file name has to be the same for all the pictures i take each day (preset is shown below) ... like "GEPA-30121156" for every picture from the 30th of december last year. 56 is my personal number as a fotografer and AFTER that there should be the numbers like "001" for the first one and "002" for the next and so on...
@ beat here is the file:

I think you just need to append a sequence number as illustrated in the screenshot Beat posted, then you'll be golden.

hi rob!
i think i tried this already and remember that the name then was (in my case) GEPA-30121156001 for the first picture and then for the next it was (as i have to export a lot of pictures each day GEPA-30121156001-1 and then GEPA-30121156001-2... :(
but last time i tried this i still had lightroom 2 or even 1... maybe things changed?

Hi Oliver,

The sequence number should auto-increment each picture, making the -1, -2, ... unnecessary.

Maybe try again and if its still does not work then post the the filename template.

I got this:

hi rob...
i tried what you did with one difference: i did not put in the whole name like you did (GEPA-30121156) and then the sequence, but i left it with the date, because then i do not have to set anything everytime i have a different date, but i automatically takes the date of the foto...
my problem:
i got those exported files then:

maybe the problem is not with the filename template editor, but then in the export editor, where it wants me to choose a "starting number"...
*bigsigh*...
what do i do wrong?
hope u got the hint for me to get it working!

wow... just found the problem:
if i do (what i usually do while editing) export ONE picture and then the next one, i get the file names like i showed...
but if i do export more pictures at once - i get a nice result like you did - this is
1) strange
2) still a little problem to me, because usually i do work as a sports fotografer and then i send one picture after the other editing them one by one...
so the only chance to change this for me is to always choose the right number in the "export"-editor, which forces me to not use "export with previous" as i used to do but always click on export and open the editor then...
*second big sigh*

maybe someone has a hint for me to avoid that...?

This is not strange at all, this is behaviour as expected. {Sequence # (001)} refers to a counter incremented with each photo exported witin one export session.

AFAIK, there is no running counter for each exported image, independant of the export session.

If Lightroom allowed you to control the format of the suffix used to ensure uniqueness, then you could get what you wanted, however it does not.

You could make that a feature request (Idea).

Otherwise, as Beat says, there is no built-in way to have an export sequence number that spans export sessions.

I assume you've already considered the "usual" way people deal with this: Export them all in one session.

It may be possible for a plugin to do it, but then you'd have to use it, and I'm not aware of any such plugin at this time.

Not sure what else to say.

thanx for your ideas anyway - i will probably do it the way i said above: just alter the "starting number" for exporting the file - as i also use a ftp-plugin this would still let me be faster than before because i can skip using a ftp-software then and have the right name.
as it is important for sports-picture-agencys to get the pictures as fast as possible, i cannot wait for all the pictures to be edited ... :(
maybe i will always wait for at least a few pictures to send them together then so i do not have to change the number for each picture and still it is faster than what i did before (i had to manually change the files name for each exportet picture)
i will think about making a request for that...
how do i do that? (here in the forum or somwhere else?)
